Averages for Mombasa in May
May is when the temperatures start to cool down in Mombasa, Kenya, with an average high of 29°C and an average low of 22°C. The sea temperature also drops down by one degree to 28°C, and sunshine hours decrease to seven hours per day – which is, along with June and August, the lowest of the year. The biggest issue many tourists will have with May though is the rainfall – at 260 mm, it is by far the wettest month of the year. While the temperature and sunshine may be excellent for most people, the excessive rain could be a drawback for May. If the weather is a concern, would-be visitors can check the annual averages.
The Dugong Festival is held in May on Lamu Island, which is only a short distance from Mombasa. The festival exists to raise awareness of the native Dugong dolphin, and part of the fun includes a donkey race. Also in May is the Rhino Charge, an annual off-road event where competitors must reach 13 points across 100 square kilometres within 10 hours in order to raise money for the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust. However, the event is located in a different area each year and kept secret until the last minute – to stop contestants learning the area in advance to gain an advantage – so you may have to travel to watch it.
The north coast of Mombasa has spectacular historic ruins: the Gedi Ruins. The ruins date back to the 15th century and are the surviving testament to Gedi, a small town that was built solely form rocks and stones. Visitors can be given a guided tour, and marvel at what is now a National Museum.
Bamburi Beach Hotel faces the Indian Ocean and is newly refurbished. Situated just 20 minutes outside of Mombasa, it is close enough for guests to explore everything the city has to offer. The hotel also provides a lot of entertainment and amenities, including live music, cabaret, acrobats, two swimming pools, squash courts, water sports, table tennis, a pool table, a beauty salon and a fitness centre, as well as a children’s adventure centre.
