Hurghada is located on the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt, and is the country’s second largest city. The area enjoys a subtropical desert climate, making it warm, sunny and dry all year round. Because of this, tourists from all over the world flock to Hurghada, especially during the colder months to try and soak up some winter sun.

December temperatures are cooler than in the summer, but still a lot warmer than the snowy UK weather. Highs of up to 22 degrees celsius are common, and overnight temperatures dip to around 12 degrees, so pack a light jacket for the evenings. Rainfall is a low 0.9mm during the month.

For some last minute unique Christmas gifts for family and friends back home, head to the Ed Dahar area; the old town. Hurghada’s largest bazaar is located here, selling all sorts of traditional Egyptian goods and crafts such as polished brass and  handmade jewellery. It’s not unusual to see a few donkeys roaming the streets, too. Don’t forget to haggle; a saving of 75% off the original asking price is normal in these circumstances.

For a larger choice and a more familiar shopping environment, check out the Senzo Mall, just south of the city centre. As well a standard souvenir shops, there’s a supermarket which is interesting to look around and see all the local Egyptian delicacies, and there’s a children’s play area which is great for those travelling with little ones.

Many hotels put on events for travellers to enjoy new years eve. The Club Calimera is one such hotel and hosts a new years eve gala dinner, as well as a Christmas day dinner so it’s a great place for celebrating the festive period. This hotel offers rooms from just £39 per night, but expect this to rise during December.
