Hurghada’s subtropical desert climate, makes it a top holiday destination boasting warm, sunny and dry all year round. Hence, tourists from all over the world flock to soak up some winter sun, especially during the colder months back home.
December temperatures are cooler than in the summer, but still a lot warmer than the snowy UK weather. Highs of up to 22 degrees celsius are common, and overnight temperatures dip to around 12 degrees, and it can feel cool and windy, so pack a light jacket for the evenings.
Rainfall is a low 0mm during the month, so although it will be cooler it's unlikely it'll be wet.
You can expect to enjoy 7 hours of sunshine a day, and the sea water temperature meanwhile is an inviting 23 degrees.
Dates for the diary
Obviously there's Christmas and New Year's Eve and day to celebrate, although expect lower key festivities than you'd experience in Europe.
Victory Day on December 23rd is marked in commemoration of the 1973 Yom Kippur War between Israel and a coalition of Arab nations, which included Egypt.
Things to do
For some last minute unique Christmas gifts for family and friends back home, head to the El Dahar area; the old town. Hurghada’s largest bazaar is located here, selling all sorts of traditional Egyptian goods and crafts such as polished brass and handmade jewellery. It’s not unusual to see a few donkeys roaming the streets, too. Don’t forget to haggle; a saving of 75 per cent off the original asking price is normal in these circumstances.
For a larger choice and a more familiar shopping environment, check out the Senzo Mall, just south of the city centre. As well a standard souvenir shops, there’s a supermarket which is interesting to look around and see all the local Egyptian delicacies, and there’s a children’s play area which is great for those travelling with little ones.
