Ayia Napa is known for its nightlife, making it a prime holiday destination with the 18-30-year-old crowd. It is located in the east of the island of Cyprus, a short distance to the south of Famagusta.

Although it is a bustling and vibrant destination in spring, summer and fall, in January it is rather quiet. With an average daily temperature of 12°C, January, together with February, is the coldest month of the year. It also has the coldest average high temperature and coldest low temperature of the entire year, 16°C and 7°C respectively. With 7°C being as cold as it gets in Ayia Napa, this is a destination that is relatively comfortable to visit all year round—the winters in Ayia Napa definitely beat the ones in the United Kingdom. Average daily temperatures decrease slightly in the course of the month, with the coldest days of the year occurring at the end of the month and in the beginning of February. The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea ranges around 18°C in January, which is still pretty warm. Only in February and March is the sea colder—but then still only one degree colder.

January is not only the coldest month of the year on average; it is also one of the wettest. Ayia Napa receives a total of 62mm of rainfall in January, the second-highest amount of precipitation of the year, after December. You can expect some kind of rainfall on 11 days in January, the highest number of rainy days in the whole year. The most likely form of precipitation is moderate rain (happening on 46% of all rainy days), followed by thunderstorms (35%) and light rain (17%). The distribution of rainfall throughout January is nearly constant.

With more rainfall comes plenty of cloud cover. January is the cloudiest month of the year—there is about 47% of cloud cover every day, with January 18 as the historically cloudiest day of the year. This is also why January is one of the two least sunny months. The average amount of sunshine per day in January is 8 hours, which, considering the amount of daylight, is still not too bad.

The length of the days increases slowly but steadily in the course of the month. The shortest day of the month is January 1, with 9.50 hours of daylight. January 31 is the longest day of the month, with 10.27 daylight hours.

Where to stay

A popular hotel is the Atlantica Club Sungarden Beach Hotel. The all-inclusive package here is exceptional value as it includes lots of dining choices, daytime and evening activities, spa treatments and water sports. It is extremely close to many tourist attractions and the busy nightlife. Additionally, the hotel overlooks Grecian Bay. The hotel itself has two outside swimming pools and another one inside, which may be the best option in January, as well as a separate children's pool. The hotel offers beginner scuba diving lessons in the pool before guests brave the sea. For an additional charge, the hotel can also arrange for parasailing, water skiing and canoeing.

The Takkas Hotel Apartments are also conveniently located. Facilities are plenty and include a cocktail lounge, game room, coffee shop, convenience store and laundry service. Each of the 69 apartments has its own bathroom, balcony and fully equipped kitchenette. This hotel is also located in the party district of Ayia Napa, an area that's full with restaurants, nightclubs and bars.

Eating and drinking out

There are more than a hundred bars and nightclubs in the resort, but one of the hottest clubs in Ayia Napa is called Bedrock, which has a prehistoric theme and free entry. There is great music, karaoke and a wide drink selection, with unique specialty drinks as well as a huge variety of wine and beer. The bar has an indoor and outdoor area and it's a great place for families in the afternoon before getting into adults-only mode at night.

For food, you might head to Jello Café Restaurant, located a couple of minutes from the Ayia Napa Harbour. This is a hip, trendy and modern café and lounge bar that draws in a crowd of young tourists. The menu consists of full meals, such as steaks, fish and hamburgers, but also of snacks, cocktails and wine.

A popular pub/bar/restaurant is Orange Grove, a place offering evening entertainment that's open year round. Unlike many other restaurants and venues in the resort, this one caters to families and couple who are after a quieter evening. It's a fantastic place for an afternoon drink, dinner or evening entertainment—there are a children's play area and evening shows.

Things to do

The Thalassa Municipal Museum of the Sea is the resort's only museum. It focuses on the sea and on the influence it has (had) on the history and development of Cyprus. It showcases everything from marine animals, such as dolphins, sea birds and turtles, to ancient fossils of shells, corals and fish. Also on display are archaeological remains of all historical periods in the history of Cyprus, from the Neolithic period to the period when the island was ruled by the Venetians. Additionally, there are a cafeteria, an amphitheatre for shows, plays and concerts, and a gift shop.

Even though rain and/or clouds are possible in January, it still is a good time to go for strolls. The Ayia Napa Harbour is a massively popular part of the town, filled with restaurants, bars, fishing boats, yachts and a beach. If the sun's out, you should definitely spend a few hours (or more) enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the harbour area.
