Santa Susanna is a small coastal town on Spain’s Costa Brava in the northeast of the country in the Catalonia region. The town lies about 70km northeast up the coast from Barcelona.

The climate of the region is an excellent one with long hit summers and mild winters. The warm surrounding seas help to keep winter temperatures mild and it doesn’t get nearly as cold as regions in land in the winter months.

The Costa Brava, or ‘wild coast’ has really made its name, however, for its great summer weather. The hot temperatures and plentiful sunshine make it a perfect summer beach holiday destination.

Annual rainfall is quite low at around 600mm and its spread quite evenly across the year with summer the driest time and late spring/late autumn the wettest.

Summer

Summer is when the tourists flock to Santa Susanna and this once sleepy village comes alive with people from all over Europe basking in the sunshine and enjoying the excellent beaches.

The summer weather lasts from June to September and average temperatures are in the 20s at this time. July and August are the hottest months of the year and can see daily highs up towards 30C. Night time temperatures meanwhile remain in the high teens during summer months. Summer days see an excellent 8-9hrs of sunshine on average

Summer heat waves can, on occasion, bring temperatures bring even hotter temperatures to Santa Susanna sometimes up into the mid 30s. Thankfully the coastal location means a cooling breeze often sweeps through the town. As well as cool sea air, the Tramonata Winds also bring cool air down from the Pyrenees Mountains in the north.

Rainfall is low but not unheard of. The driest month is July with just under 40mm average rainfall. Other summer months see around 50-60mm. Most of the rain falls in short heavy showers when bad weather comes down from the mountain, so there is plenty of sunshine still. Summer days can get quite humid but the coastal breezes help to moderate this.

Winter

Winters generally mild in Santa Susanna thanks mainly to the coastal location; temperatures inland can frequently drop below zero inn northern and central Spain. The months of December to February see average temperatures at around 8C, with daytime highs rising to 13 or 14C and nightly lows dropping to a bit of a chilly 2C. It rarely gets to freezing on the coast.

In terms of rainfall, you can expect some wet stormy weather but precipitation is not high in general – averaging around 50-60mm a month.

Winter days still average 4 to 5 hours of sunshine so there is a lot of good mild and sunny winter weather.

Occasionally the Tramonata Winds can bring cold weather down from the Pyrenees and it will feel a bit chilly. Strong winds can occur along the coast in winter too, but you never really get harsh cold winter weather here. It is more akin to a spring in England.

Spring and Autumm

These are both excellent seasons to visit Santa Susanna as temperatures are good but summer crowds have thinned out significantly.

Late spring and late autumn are the wettest times of the year with around 80mm monthly rainfall.

Of the two seasons autumn is the warmest with averages ranging from 20C in September to 11C in November. September really is an excellent month to visit, and October still enjoys daily highs above 20C. Temperatures are good in May too, getting up to the low/mid 20s in the day, but rainfall is at its most likely of the year.
