Averages for San Sebastian in December
December is the coldest month of the year in San Sebastian, with temperatures reaching just 12°C (54°F). With just five hours of sunshine a day, you will not be spending much time at the beach!
The upside of visiting San Sebastian out of season is that there are not many tourists around, meaning you can explore the city at your own pace. Accommodation will also be plentiful and very cheap.
However, there are plenty of events taking place during the month of December that mean a visit at this time of year is still worthwhile.
Music lovers will enjoy the Gospel Concerts that take place in early December at the Kursaal Centre. This popular type of music sees choirs from as far as the USA coming to San Sebastian to compete.
The Santo Tomas Fair on December 21st is the main event for festivities in San Sebastian during this month. Stalls are erected around Plaza de la Constitution and the best of local produce is on offer. Here you can find everything from traditional food and locally produced cider, cheese and honey, to the best in local handicrafts.
Music and street entertainment continue long into the evening to complete the party atmosphere. Traditionally, there is also a large pig on display which is given as a prize at the end of the day!
And of course, the winter cold does not dampen San Sebastian’s love of all things athletic, as New Year’s Eve pays host to the 5 mile (8km) San Silvestre Footrace.
Get involved or cheer on the participants before going to revel in the various New Year street parties and fireworks taking place across the city.
