Averages for San Sebastian in August

August is the warmest month of the year in San Sebastian and as such it is packed with holiday makers.

With ten hours of sunshine every day and temperatures reaching a high of 24°C, the beaches are the centre of action.

The beautiful Bay of La Concha an idyllic place to be, boasting miles of sandy beaches and stunning views. The water is calm and so is perfect for families with young children, but also has plenty of areas with high octane water sports to indulge in.

There are, however, risks with such warm weather. It is advisable to wear sunscreen with a strong enough SPF for your skin and to cover up with hats and sunglasses. Staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, usually between midday and 3pm, will help you avoid sunstroke.

Away from the beach, August is festival time and so there is plenty to see and do.

The week long Semana Grande festival in the middle of the month is always a huge attraction. Fireworks displays take place each night on the seafront at La Concha Bay, with prizes for the most impressive display being given at the end of the week!

There are also sporting events, theatre performances  and even bullfighting – not for the faint hearted! Food stalls, street entertainment and live music take place all over the city, adding to the general party atmosphere.

The Quincena Musical is a classical music festival with many events taking place at the Kursaal Centre.

And the Annual Paseo Neuvo Swim is a swimming race that takes place between Playa de la Concha and Playa de la Zurriol. Athletic types may join in, or you can just stand by and cheer on the swimmers!
