Bars and Restaurants

Matilda

For the authentic Madrileno cafe experience, head over to Matilda, a popular neighbourhood cafe that makes an excellent spot for morning coffee, brunch or a light lunch. A short walk away from the Puerta de Atocha railway station and tucked away along an unassuming side street, this charming cafe doesn't have much space to offer but that adds to its overall appeal.

La General

Another place to park yourself during the day and escape the brisk temperatures is La General. When you pass through its welcoming doors, you'll be forgiven for almost mistaking the place for a public library or living room, and as such it's a fine spot to spend a lazy afternoon or stock up in the morning over a hearty breakfast and cup of coffee before seeing the sights of Madrid. Things to do in Madrid in February

Museo del Romanticismo

As its name suggests, the Museo del Romanticismo showcases the spoils of the Romantic art and cultural movement and acts as a compendium to the high culture of the 19th century. Housing a treasure trove of mostly paintings, furniture, porcelain, books and photos, this pleasing museum is often passed over by tourists in favour of the Golden Art Triangle and as such is something of a hidden gem - and well worth exploring. Occupying an 18th century mansion which was converted into a museum in the 1920s, there's a limit of 100 people in the museum at any one time. Admission is free from 2.30pm onwards on Sundays.

CaixaForum Madrid

With a focus on contemporary culture and 21st century happenings, CaixaForum Madrid showcases the best of art, music, literary events and other goings-on in the city. Famous for its striking facade, the centre is a sight to behold and is worth visiting alone for its stunning architectural styles. Housed in a former electric power station, this is a fine example of urban regeneration and there's always something taking place here. A cafe, shop/bookstore and restaurant complete the centre's amenities.

Santiago Bernabeu Tour

Madrid is a mecca for football fans and the Santiago Bernabeu Tour provides the only way to immerse yourself in the sporting legacy of the city. Visit the Bernabeu Stadium, home of the world-famous Real Madrid football club, and take a self-guided tour of its grounds and inner quarters, including the dressing room. A series of interactive exhibits bring the place to life while providing some context to the place. A must for all sports lovers!

Railway Museum

Located in the atmospheric (and now defunct) Delicias railway station, the Railway Museum is an excellent transport museum which is a great place for family outings. Discover the various railway vehicles under the cast iron roof (locomotives and carriages), as well as a range of other artefacts, materials and exhibits that bring the history of the Spanish railways to life. The museum puts on a regular range of activities such as educational workshops, theatrical performances and train rides in the gardens. Put your feet up in the cafe - in a beautiful 1930s restaurant carriage, no less.

Madrid Carnival

Taking place at various venues across the city, the Madrid Carnival is one of the city's biggest events and visitors travelling in early February should expect to find the streets awash with citizens decked out in various colourful costumes and flamboyant dress. Promoting an inclusive atmosphere of a free-for-all, you're encouraged to join the party and take part in the celebrations.
