OCTOBER

Overview

October sees a rather steep upturn in the weather, fast approaching the winter months. Despite that, October is a very popular and pleasant time to visit Madrid, with much cooler temperatures, making exploration much easier on the body.

You can expect an average temperature of around 15°C, still very pleasant indeed, with an average high of 21°C, and a low of 9°C during the evening.

There is a little more rain in Madrid at this time of year compared to the previous couple of months, however it is still quite minimal, with an average of 40mm expected, affecting 10 days across the whole of October. Sunshine is reduced also, with 4 hours of sunshine per day to enjoy.

Where to stay

Those looking for grandeur and opulence are in luck when visiting Madrid, as the Westin Palace Madrid is one of the most beautiful and sophisticated hotels you could dream to stay in. Very grand, and especially beautiful when it is lit up at night, this is located within the famous Art Triangle, and in the cooler October temperatures this is the ideal area to explore.

For something a little smaller but equally as central, and equally as comfortable, how about the Hotel Arosa? Located right in the centre of Madrid, this hotel is within walking distance to all the major sightseeing attractions, and has an on-site health club if you feel like getting active during your stay.

Things to do

October is a fantastic time to get active in Madrid, with still very pleasant temperatures, yet away from the stifling heat of July and August. If you’re a golf fan then you will be thrilled with the large range of courses available to you in and around Madrid, and most are very easy to get to, especially if you hire a car. Aranjuez Golf Course is a very picturesque choice of course to visit, also known as the City Garden of Aranjez. This is has a very natural setting, and feels away from tourism.

Alternatively, Real Sociedad Golf Course may be a slightly pricier option, but keen golf fans will certainly be happy to pay it, because of the quality of the course. This 36 hole complex actually has two courses, and is situated about 20 minutes outside of the centre of Madrid, giving you plenty of chance to check out the scenery as you travel there.

You could also get active in other ways, and cycling is a popular activity in Madrid. Many residents here actually cycle to get around the city, and there are dedicated cycle lanes for that reason. Alternatively, you could head out into the countryside and hire a mountain bike, or you could hike in the mountains instead. There are several dedicated hiking trails, and you should always stick to these for safety. One choice is the GR88 Ponton de la Olivia, Cerezo de Abayo route. The part of this route closest to Madrid is around 65km long, and obviously you will follow as far as you see fit, covering the northern sierra of Madrid.

Sticking with the sporting theme, if you prefer not to actually get active yourself but see someone else doing it, then a visit to Real Madrid’s home stadium is a must do. Santiago Bernabeu is a huge and imposing place to visit, seating over 81,000 spectators. You can go on a tour of the stadium, which will thrill fans of the team, however you don’t even have to be a fan to enjoy this, as the place itself is something to behold.

Where to eat & drink

A wide range of eateries greets you when you arrive in Madrid, from Spanish tapas bars to full on Michelin star gourmet restaurants, and everything in-between. There are plenty of international choices on offer throughout the city, some you won’t even have thought of, but if you’re wanting to fill your belly with Thai cuisine one evening, then head to Bambubox for a delicious meal in chilled-out, oriental-style surroundings – the portions are large here, bear that in mind!

It might be Italian you’re craving, in which case OrsOMattO is a modern, Italian restaurant to try, with colourful décor and delicious food. The pasta here is particularly tasty. Alternatively, if you simply want a few cocktails and to watch the world go by, head to El miniBAR for exactly that.
