Gozo in April

Weather Lowdown

April is the start of a long summer of warm, dry weather in Gozo as the climate improves on an almost daily basis.

There is still some volatility to the weather in April, especially towards the beginning of the month. But an average day time temperature of 16°C and highs peaking at 19°C ensure some exceptional days for anyone visiting the region.

Peak temperatures of more than 31°C have been recorded during April in Gozo in the past, with the highest temperature of 31.1°C registered in 1999. However in 2003, the lowest temperature in recorded history was also experienced for April in Gozo. But at a very comfortable 12°C, Gozo still remains much milder than many other parts of Europe at this time of year.

Thanks to the warmer climates in February and March, April is also the month when the sea temperatures start to rise in Gozo. By mid-April, swimmers and divers can expect the sea temperature to climb up to 17°C and then continue to get warmer throughout the summer season.

Visitors to Gozo in April can also enjoy up to 11 hours of daily sun, with only 10 of those days expecting any kind of rainfall at all. However, with only a 20% chance of rain every day and expected precipitation amounting to just 23mm throughout the entire month, even when it does rain in the region, the weather doesn’t have to spoil the visit.

The reduction in rainfall also ensures humidity falls during the month, both during the day and during the night.

The climate in Gozo during April is very much on par with other resorts in the region and equal to those in Valetta on the main island of Malta. The weather is also significantly more pleasant than neighbouring resorts including Syracuse on the southern tip of Sicily and Sfax in nearby Tunisia.

Things to Do

When visiting Gozo in April, one of the most exquisite sights has to be the central Citadel. With restoration underway to return this historic site back to its former glory, this has been the central point of Gozo for centuries and no visit to the island would be the same without seeing it. Aged back to Neolithic times, the Citadel is a key part of military and religious life in Gozo. Walk along the winding streets, admire the many historic buildings and monuments and take a coffee in one of the many local cafés. In the Citadel you gain a true understanding of Gozitan history.

While the weather remains cooler, hiring a bike in Gozo is a wonderful way to see the sites and get some exercise at the same time. The narrow roads are still relatively clear at this time of the year. And with a range of adult and children’s bikes for hire, as well as motorbikes and scooters, the whole family can enjoy the fresh air and have some fun.

When the shopping bug bites, Gozo Glass offers some of the most elegant, yet affordable high quality glass crafts on the island. Located close to the main bus route, you can see the team of expert craftsmen creating their crafts as they have been doing so for over 25 years. Invest in a full glass structure or simply buy a single pebble to commemorate your visit. No one should come away from Gozo Glass empty handed.

Restaurants and Nightlife

April is the perfect time to enjoy a quiet pizza and enjoy the view of Marsalforn Bay as Piutrentanove Lounge Bar prepares for the busy summer season. As the temperature rises, Piutrentanove becomes a very popular hot spot on Gozo, serving cocktails, beers and pizzas to a plethora of guests. But before all that starts, you can enjoy a night in the village and soak in the superb atmosphere with a glass of something you fancy.

Beautifully fresh local produce and excellent service ensures the Seaview Restaurant is a must for all visitors to Gozo. While seafood and fish are the specialities of the house, their range of meat dishes, extensive wine list and mouth-watering desserts will not leave you wanting. Drop by for a drink before dinner and enjoy the sights of the Mediterranean Sea, or book a table and enjoy a meal you will not forget.

If there is one thing that goes well with a nice glass of wine, it is a bruschetta, and at Maldonado Bistro in Victoria, they specialise in both. But this is no ordinary bruschetta. This is large, traditional Gozitan bruschetta with more flavour than you have tasted before. Follow it up with one of the local delicacies including rabbit or sea snails. And make sure you wash it down with your own choice from their range of local and international wines.
