During this month, average temperatures of 19°C are common, made up of highs of 21°C and lows of 15°C. The sea temperature is 22°C – perfect for enjoying a dip – and there are around eight hours of sunshine each day. Things to do

Animal and nature lovers won’t want to miss the chance to go horseback riding with Horse Riding Adventures in Tenerife. The only British family-run stables on the island, Horse Riding Adventures in Tenerife is located to the west of Aldea Blanca and can easily be reached by any resort in the south. The owners offer horse and pony treks in the countryside surrounding the stables as well as lessons for beginners and experienced riders. There is a pony club every Saturday morning between 10.30am and 12.30pm, when tourists and residents enjoy games and competitions while learning to ride.

When it comes to evening entertainment, the Medieval Adventure at Castillo San Miguel is one of the best nights out in Tenerife. Situated at the bottom of Aldea Blanca, just up from Las Chafiras, this performance takes you on a journey back through time, with jousting knights, horses, sword fights and damsels in distress. After you’ve watched the show and cheered for the knight fighting for your honour, you’ll get to enjoy an authentic medieval meal – no cutlery allowed. The evening comes to a close as the Drifters take to the stage to perform a series of glitzy American soul classics.

Time to celebrate

Around the 30th of November, the Fiesta de San Andrés is celebrated in Puerto de la Cruz. This festival marks the start of the wine season, when the streets of the resort are laden with kiosks offering samples from the latest harvest. There are also a number of stalls set up around the harbour selling other winter treats, including roast chestnuts. On the main day – this changes every year, so keep an eye out for posters – wine fairs are held throughout the resort and children run through the streets with metal tins attached to pieces of string – an ancient Canarian tradition.

Icod de los Vinos also celebrates Fiesta de San Andrés around the same time, usually between the 29th and 30th. There are the usual wine and food fairs, as well as an interesting tradition which is fun for the whole family to watch. During this time of year, children fly down the steep streets on tiny metal trays, symbolic of the way wine used to be brought down from the vineyards on wooden boards.

Hit the beach

At 1.5km long, La Tejita in El Médano is the largest natural sand beach in Tenerife and makes a fantastic place for walking. This Blue Flag beach offers a number of amenities, such as sun beds, parasols and life guards during the busy season. The strong winds make it popular for surfers and body boarders, whereas its secluded location attracts naturists.

Found at the foot of the Anaga Mountains, the natural rock pools at Bajamar are a great place to spend some time when the weather is warm and sunny. Although these pools offer no direct facilities, there is a handful of bars, cafes and shops in the area. The waters are surrounded by flat stone tiles, providing the ideal place for sunbathing and the pools are protected from the rough north waves, so even the littlest little ones can enjoy a dip.

Eating (and drinking) out

Pizzeria Bacco is one of the most popular restaurants in Garachico. Only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this Italian eatery offers some of the best pizzas in the Canary Islands, with a huge selection of toppings to choose from. Because this small restaurant fills up quickly, a take-away service is available, so no one has to leave disappointed.

In the south of the island, Tasca Casa Paco in Los Cristianos is another popular choice when it comes to dining in Tenerife. This small tapas bar offers a great selection of Canarian dishes and a large wine list to accompany them. Tables get booked up quickly, so make your reservation at least one week in advance if you can.

Musical aficionados won’t want to miss the chance to spend an evening at Karting Las Americas to see the Sound of Musicals. Held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, this show is a collection of 15 musicals which will have everyone singing along. A meal and free drinks all night are included in the price of the ticket.

If you’d prefer something a bit more low key, try Dreamers Bar in Los Cristianos. Owned by Roy Crewdson – guitarist from the 60s band Freddie and the Dreamers – this bar offers nightly entertainment, as well as a selection of fantastic pub grub dishes served from 11am until 9.30pm.
