Salou is a coastal resort on the Costa Dorada of Catalunya in northeast Spain. It’s about 10km from the town of Tarragona, 90kms down the coast from Barcelona and 150km down from the more renowned Costa Brava. Tourists are attracted by its numerous coves and beaches and excellent scenery as well as by the great summer weather.

The climate in Salou is typically Mediterranean meaning warm summers with plenty of sunshine and mild winters. There are rarely extremes in temperature. It has a good balance; summer temperatures are a little cooler and more comfortable than the resorts of southern Spain, while winter temperatures are milder than those felt in other parts of northern Europe. The climate is regulated by the surrounding sea.

Summer is the main tourist season as the weather becomes perfect for enjoying the beautiful beaches. Daily highs average at 28°C in summer while night time lows drop to about 20°C. It can get hotter, into the high 30s, although there is often a cooling sea breeze to relieve the heat. These blow strongest at night and generally ensure pleasant evenings.

The sunny warm weather can arrive as early as May and last up to October, though the peak summer months are July and August, when the average temperature is 25°C.

Rainfall is low in summer, although not as unlikely as further south in Spain. June and July are the driest months of the year with around 10-15mm on average.

Spring and autumn are also great times to visit if you like it a little quieter, cooler and cheaper. As already mentioned, the months either side of high summer can offer great weather. May and September frequently enjoy highs in the mid-20s and plenty of sunshine.

Late spring and early autumn are, however, the wettest times of the year with around 40-50mm. Still, this is not particularly high and short heavy downpours leave lots of time for sun.

By late autumn the real heat has gone but temperatures remain mild. Daily highs in November are 16°C, but lows drop into single digits.

The temperatures increase quickly with the onset of spring – highs in March average at 17°C and can touch 20°C in April. Early spring is also quite dry.

Winter weather is pretty good in Salou – daily highs are in the low to mid teens and rainfall is low. Occasionally storms can come in off the Mediterranean or roll down from the Pyrenees but there is still plenty of sunshine at this time of year.

The coldest it gets is about 4°C and temperatures below zero are very rare. The temperate Mediterranean Sea helps to keep away the cold temperatures that can be experienced inland in Spain.
