Averages for Rio de Janeiro in January
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is the South American country’s 2nd largest city, and most popular tourist destination. Situated along the Atlantic coastline, the city commonly referred to simply as ‘Rio’ has been awarded the honour of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it’s spectacular and varied cultural landscape.
Much like Angra dos Reis, located 100 miles west of the city centre, Rio de Janeiro sees very little variation in temperature and precipitation across the year. However, with readings between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius on average, January usually tops the charts in terms of heat by just a few degrees, making it Rio de Janeiro’s hottest month. Precipitation is a low and standard 10 mm, with around half of the month seeing rainfall.
Sugarloaf Mountain, rising 396 metres above sea level, is one of Rio de Janeiro’s biggest tourist attractions. Visitors can travel to the Sugarloaf Complex at the summit by cable car from Praia Vermelha. Despite ascending so high, the trip takes just 6 minutes total as the cars travel at a speed of 10 metres per second. The journey itself is as much as part of the experience as reaching the summit, with unrivalled views over the Leblon beaches, the Corcovado Mountains and Guanabara Bay.

For fast food with a difference, try My Thai. There are no burgers or chicken nuggets here, just good quality Thai cuisine served up in an informal and relaxed environment. There’s a wide choice of appetisers and light bites such as prawn spring rolls and chicken and basil dumplings, as well as a large selection of more filling dishes such as red shiitake curry and a range of the ever popular Pad Thai.
The Mercure Rio de Janeiro Botafogo hotel is slightly different to other hotels in the city centre, offering apartment-style accommodation from £81 per night. All apartments boast private balconies overlooking the sights, although the larger accommodations also come complete with a kitchen area for light cooking. The apartment aspect makes it an ideal choice for families and groups who wish to bunk together.
