Averages for Hersonissos in August

In Hersonissos, August is almost similar to July. For starters, it is still summer and the booming Tourist peak season is still in full gear.

The Festival of the Virgin Mary is the second biggest festival here after Easter. This is also known as Dormition and is celebrated on the 15th of August.  Many Greeks observe a two week fast before this massive religious ceremony. Celebrations take place in every church with plenty of food, and dance.  

A number of traditional Greek cultural festivities start in Hersonissos during this month. The visitors must spend some time enjoying the traditional Grape harvest festival.

Sultana Festival is another Cretan festival that is held at the end of August. Traditional dance performances take place accompanied by plenty of food and wine.

The Transfiguration of Christ is another important festivity during the month of August.
