Weather lowdown

October is mid-Autumn, the rainy season, in Alicante. It’s still quite warm and pleasant for sightseeing, or other activities, but definitely not beach weather anymore. At times it’s likely the weather will be quite unpleasant, wet and windy.

There are up to 7 hours of sunshine each day and the average temperature is 20C, with highs of 25C; still quite temperate. The mornings tend to start out sunny, degenerating into wind, rain and thunderstorms after midday. Temperatures will drop to a low of 15C overnight and may even fall as low as 10C or 11C. The coldest overnight temperature ever recorded in the area is 4C. Humidity is high year round in Alicante, around 70%, so it will feel a little warmer despite relatively high wind speeds at this time of year. It’s a similar story across the country, with average temperatures of 18C and highs of 22C in Barcelona.

Sea temperatures remain relatively warm, 23C, in October though it’s likely to be too cold and wet to do much swimming or sunbathing.

Autumn is the rainy season in Alicante when frequent, heavy afternoon showers and thunderstorms are known to produce flash floods. Average rainfall of 66mm over 4 days is expected. Thanks to the area’s unique topography and microclimate, Alicante receives less rainfall than many other areas of Spain for much of the year. In Seville, for example, they expect average rainfall of around 70mm over 6 days. Other areas, like Almeria, will see significantly less precipitation and are unlikely to be subject to the same storms and flooding; Almeria only expects 30mm of rainfall over the month, less than half that in Alicante.

Sakura is located in Benidorm, but don’t let the distance put you off. This Japanese restaurant is worth the drive. The sushi is exquisite. It is a little pricy but with high quality food, service and elegant décor, well worth the extra money.
