Torrevieja has a glorious Mediterranean climate of hot summer, mild winters and low rainfall year round. Sitting in the Alicante region on the Mediterranean Costa Blanca of Spain, Torrevieja benefits from its southerly location ensuring summer heat and from the moderating effects of the sea causing winter warmth. It is also protected from rain-bearing north winds by mountains further inland.

Summer, from June till September, is very hot with temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s throughout the season. The average high temperature peaks in August at 31°C. June is probably the most pleasant month to visit as the average high is 27°C and the average low is 16°C. Night times in the following summer months see average highs around 20°C which can be uncomfortable. September is slightly warmer than June but sees less sunshine. July is the sunniest month with around eleven hours of sunshine per day. Rainfall is even lower than usual; the peak months are often in drought. In early summer a cooling sea breeze often helps to temper the temperature and humidity is low at all times making the heat easier to acclimatise to.

Autumn, in October and November, is still gorgeously warm, preferable to the scorching heat of summer. The average high temperature drops to 24°C in October and 20°C in November, while night times are decidedly cool at 14°C and 10°C respectively. Sunshine levels are reduced but it is still sunny for around six or seven hours per day. The sea is warm enough for swimming until the very end of the season.  However, this is the area’s rainiest season… which isn’t really saying much; the season can expect around 100 mm of rain in total. This usually falls in short, heavy outbursts, often with thunder and lightning.

Winter, from December till February, is warm to cool with little rain. It can be overcast but the area still sees around six hours of sunshine per day which is blissful in comparison to London’s one hour per day in December. The temperature is very susceptible to sunshine and on clear days it can get up near 20°C, though a cold wind often blows making it colder again. The average high temperature is 16°C in January which is the coldest month. Average lows around 6°C mean frosts are rare, though away from the coast it can get down to freezing.

Spring, from March till May, is a great time to enjoy warmth without crowds. The average high temperature gets up to 19°C in March, 20°C in April and 23°C in May. Sunshine steadily increases and rain becomes even more unlikely. However, cold breezes can raise goosebumps, night times are cold and the sea is does not get above 17°C till the very end of the season. Late May is probably the best time of year to visit; the sea is not as warm as in autumn, but the sun comes out for nine hours per day and rain is very rare.
