This evening's weather forecast for Moraira, Spain
Moraira
is a popular beach resort located on Spain’s popular Costa Blanca in the
south east of the country. Moraira is about 20 miles up the coast from Benidorm
and about 45 miles up from Alicante.
The region’s great climate has helped it become one of Europe’s
top beach holiday destinations and Moraira is no different. In summer expect
hot temperatures and clear blue skies. The climate is Mediterranean
so the warm surrounding seas and southerly location make for mild winters too.
Moraira enjoys as many as 325 sunny days each year and average annual temperature
is 20 ºC, ranging from 25 ºC in peak summer to 11 ºC in mid winter.
Summer
Summer is what the region
is famous for – perfect beach weather. Daily highs are commonly in the 30s in
mid summer and rainfall is very low. Summer days can
sometimes get extremely hot and have been known to reach up to 40 ºC in July
and August. Fortunately, the coastal location means the heat is relieved by
cooling sea breezes so it doesn’t feel so hot. Humidity is low too.
Summer day’s average as much as 12 hours of sunshine per day and rainfall is as
low as 30mm per month in summer. It really is glorious summer weather in
Moraira, just remember to take good care in the sun; use plenty of sun cream,
and don’t spend too long in the sun especially in the middle of the day. Cover
up with a hat and t-shirt for extra protection.
Winter
Winter sees mild temperatures
and a good amount of sunshine – around 6 hours a day on average. Temperatures
vary a little in winter; it can get down to 5 ºC in the night but sunny winter
days can see the mercury rising to a very comfortable 16 ºC or 17 ºC.Rainfall is an occurrence in winter but it is not high on average – around 40mm
per month. Rough weather in the Mediterranean
can occasionally bring heavy rains and high winds along the coast but this is
not frequent and the bad weather is usually short-lived. The
pleasant winter weather is also helped by the mountains inland from the region
that quickly rises to over 1000m and offer shelter from bad weather.
Occasionally inclement weather will arrive and it is what the locals refer to
as the ‘Gota Fria’. It translates to English ‘cold drop’ and can
bring very heavy rains. The phenomenon is caused when warm; moisture laden air
off the sea meets cooler air. The mountains act as a block where huge clouds
can form – sometimes as much as 10km in height. Heavy, localized thunder storms
can unload more than 10inches of rain in just a couple of hours. The storms are
sudden and heavy when they arrive but they are normally short-lived and only occur
two or three times each year.
Autumn
and Spring
These two seasons are both
great times to visit as the weather is good and the resort is quieter than the
summer months. Of the two, autumn is a little warmer but spring a little drier.
Late spring sees a lot of sunshine (10hrs on average in
May) and temperatures reaching into the mid-20s in the day. Early spring can
still be a little chilly at night and in the early morning, with average lows
still in single figures in March. Rainfall is around 40-50mm average in the
spring months. Autumn sees warm air and sea temperatures lasting right
up until November. September is really summer-like in its weather, though the
likelihood of rain is a little higher. October highs remain in the mid 20s and
it rarely dips below the mid-teens. November is a little cooler and it can drop
into single figures at night, though daily highs average nearly 20 ºC.
Autumn is the wettest time of year, especially September and October which
average around 80mm. Still, this is not a huge amount as Moraira experiences
fairly low rainfall except when the Gota Fria visits.
