Larnaca is a coastal city in the republic of Cyprus. Situated on the east coast of the island, upon the Mediterranean, Larnaca enjoys a climate rich with sunshine and enjoyable conditions year round.

The city is one of Cyprus’s major sea side resorts, famed for its picturesque sea front, lined with rows and rows of palm trees and scenic city promenades. There are numerous idyllic beaches within close range from the city; two of these (Phinikoudes and McKenzie) recently awarded Blue Flags in recognition of their high level environmental cleanliness.

Cyprus as a whole enjoys a warm dry climate, rain mainly falling between November to March. Variations in temperature and rainfall throughout the island are determined by altitude and distance from the coast. Larnaca lies at one of the lowest altitude points in Cyprus and is situated on the coast, so as a result is enjoys gorgeous weather year round.

Larnaca’s climate is a Mediterranean climate characterised by long dry summers and mild winters, separated by short shoulder seasons of autumn and spring.

SUMMER

Summers are hot, cloudless with the scorching sun belting down on the beaches for 11 hours a day however like most Mediterranean climates the blistering heat is cooled by a pleasant sea breeze, particularly noticeable in the evenings. There is generally little to no rainfall throughout June to September, and temperatures can reach the mid to high 30’s.

June and September generally see average daily temperatures of 24 and 25 degrees (respectively) with the middle summer months of July and August seeing higher averages of 26 and 27 degrees. Rain fall begins to pick up slowly toward the end of September, before the wettest months of December to February.

Cyprus is under the influence of a shallow low pressure trough which extends from the great continental depression that is centred over southwest Asia, so as a result summers are hot and the skies during these months are often completely cloudless.

WINTER

Winters in Larnaca are mild. Typically they play host to mild rainfall, particularly during November to April. During winter the nearby Troodos mountains (home to Mount Olympus) will experience snowfall, though this will not make it down into the coastal towns.

Average temperature throughout December to February is 12 to 13 degrees, with an average maximum of 17 to 18 in December and February and 16 in January. There generally about 5-8 days of rain per month throughout the period from November through until March, with January being the wettest month, averaging 8 rain days.

The majority of the annual rainfall occurs during the winter months. This is a result of the small depressions with cross the Mediterranean Sea. These depressions result in periods of disturbed weather which usually only last for a day or so.
