Situated in Spain's province of Malaga, Fuengirola enjoys the sub-tropical Mediterranean climate of the Costa del Sol. Long, hot summers are accompanied by mild, unpredictable winters.

Summers in Fuengirola are very long and hot. It is a favourite for sport enthusiasts seeking the area’s long stretches of perfect weather. In June eleven hours of sunshine per day is average, though it sometimes appears hazy. The sea gets up to a comfortable 20°C and low humidity takes the edge off the heat. The peak months of July and August see temperatures around 30°C and the cooling sea breeze cannot always be relied upon for relief. Blue skies and brilliant sunshine are to be expected every day with little exception and the sea sometimes reaches the mid 20s. The nights stay uncomfortably hot nearing 20°C. September remains very hot, humidity levels rise, without much chance of refreshing rain, and fog often loiters over the beaches.

In the early and late months of the summer, May and October, day time temperatures are regularly in the mid 20s, while the evenings can be considerably cooler seeing average lows around 13°C. These are considered by some to be the best months to visit this area of Spain as the heat only reaches uncomfortable levels in the middle of the day. However, while in May sunshine can be guaranteed, the sea has not had time to warm up, lingering around 17°C, and in October the region is prone to unpredictable thunderstorms. However, these bursts of rain are usually short, torrential downpours.

Autumn, winter and spring are characterised by unpredictability. While the middle of winter, in December and January, is certainly the coldest point of the year on average, the entire period from November to April sees huge discrepancies between weather conditions from one day to the next. Rain and thunder can last for days and temperatures can drop enough to see the occasional frost, yet other days will receive brilliant sunshine and temperatures into the low 20s. In November the sea is still warm enough to dip into, after which it cools down till the summer. February sees Fuengirola’s springtime and the blossoming of Andalucian almond trees.

Sitting on Spain’s most popular coast, Fuengirola’s climate can be attributed to its location and geography. It is right on the clear Mediterranean Sea in southern  Spain and is protected by the surrounding hills. The result is a sun trap with cooling breezes from the sea for some of the summer. While winter weather is unpredictable and heavy rains can last for prolonged periods, summer months are reliably hot and clear, rainfall occurring in short bursts.
