Antalya is one of Turkey’s favourite tourist
destinations. On the South Western coast of Turkey, Antalya is nestled between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. This idyllic location results in the
region basking in a glorious typical Mediterranean climate of long, hot summers
and mild winters. Antalya
is situated upon a cliff overlooking the sea, and due to its proximity to near
by mountain ranges the region is protected from cold northerly winds. Antalya is home to some of the Mediterranean’s
cleanest beaches which make it a perfect holiday destination. The resort region
plays host to palm lined promenades, a historic castle and a marina which all
help give rise to the region being known as the “Turkish Riviera”. Antalya sees, on average,
300 days of uninterrupted sun each year and few days of rain.
The region only averages 55.5 days of rain per year with 75% of this occurring
in the winter months, spring and autumn sees 16% of this and Summer only 2%.
Summer
Summersin Antalya are essentially 8 to 9 months long. April sees an
average temperature
of 16 ºC, rising to 28 ºC by July and August, 21 ºC
in October
and returning to a still pleasant 16 ºC in November. July and August give rise to
scorching summer heat, with the relentless sun
belting out temperatures of over 40 ºC. The highest temperature ever recorded
in Antalya in
the last 4 decades was 44.6ºC the region often sees temperatures in excess of
40 ºC. Though these maximum temperatures are harsh, the Mediterranean
Sea breezes and north easterly winds from the inland provide a
welcoming relief. The cool breeze that blows through the city off the sea is
particularly refreshing, and the soft westerly wind known locally as the
‘Dokkun’ blows through the town toward the sea and cools the city in the
evenings.
Winter
The
Wintermonths of December through until Marchwitness
average temperatures of 12 ºC to 13 ºC, and maintain an average humidity of
about 64% which given its time of year, is reasonably high.
The average low for December and March sits at 8 ºC, falling to 6 ºC in the
months of January
and February.
December
and January are also the wettest months, receiving 238mm monthly precipitation
each on average.
Overall, Antalya’s
privileged location makes it an exquisite sea side holiday spot. The ocean temperature
never falls below 15 ºC and rises to 29 ºC come mid summer. The surrounding
mountain ranges result in the formation of narrow coastal plains. Antalya itself is situated on one of these plains and
consists of two flat areas where the mountains recede from the shore, this
provides for an incredibly picturesque and impressive view over the Gulf of Antalya from throughout the coast.
