Weather Overview for Vienna

Vienna is known for its placid continental climate; one with variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Austria’s capital has warm and pleasant summers and winters with cold temperatures sometimes below freezing point.

On average, 2000 hours of sunshine are registered annually, and it can actually get relatively hot at times during the summer.

Vienna is uncovered to both a warm, dry climate and also a raw Alpine climate so the temperature and weather conditions tend toward extremes. Higher than the average temperatures or even large drops in temperature can take place at any time of year.

Even though most people think of the summer climate in Vienna being pleasurable and quite sunny, there are days when it can in fact feel exceedingly hot. Visitors wishing to see the city during the period from June to September will however find the climate very comfortable. Each August Vienna will typically experience climates with average high temperatures of 22°C to 26°C and lows of around 14°C. Temperatures can on occasions sometimes exceed 30°C and although it usually lasts a week or two, this fine weather can be short lived. Precipitation is generally moderate throughout the year, but summers are slightly wetter than winters so don’t overlook the chance of alternating rain during Vienna's summer with somewhere between 2.5 and 3 inches of rainfall on average.

Both spring and autumn months are fresh and mild. The springtime climate for the duration of April sees average temperatures around 14°C by day, even reaching 16°C or 17°C during the sunniest of weather. Others find autumn an attractive and somewhat romantic season to spend time in Vienna, although the skies can be rather overcast on some days. When the sun sets, the autumnal period quickly cools down, mainly when it’s breezy.

In Winter; From November to February, the temperatures drop but are still mild in comparison to many other cities in Europe. Daily highs can reach 7ºC, while lows only occasionally drop to freezing point or below. Vienna's climate is not entirely predictable - winter temperatures have fallen to -15°C. On the other hand sometimes February can at times be freezing, and sometimes will see residents outside in shorts. Snowfall mainly occurs in December through to March whilst Vienna experiences the peak of winter.

Vienna is recognised as one of the safest capital cities in the world and is renowned for a great holiday experience! The recommended times to travel are spring, the beginning of summer and autumn when temperatures are most likely to be mild and at their most pleasant.
