Sorrento lies in the picturesque Campania region of southern Italy. While it is a small town, with only 16, 500 residents, it is a very popular tourist destinations for those holidaying in Amalfi or people wanting to visit the fossilized city of Pompeii.

Sorrento, along with sitting in close proximity to Mount Vesuvius and the historic towns in the region, is also easily accessible from Naples and Positano, and is nearby to many other quaint sea side holiday spots such as the small town of San Angelo.

One of the best time times to visit Sorrento is the spring time, as not only are temperatures much cooler than the higher temps of mid summer, but it is also just prior to the peak tourist season so you can still manage to find some bargains and wont be fighting off as many other tourists!

In saying this, summer is a magnificent time in the area. While temperatures do reach highs of high 20’s and into the 30’s, its coastal location means it is moderated by the ocean waters and the evenings are cooled down by refreshing sea breezes. You may be paying slightly higher prices for accommodation and you will find the restaurants and cafes much busier, but this will also equate for a much livelier atmosphere.

Summer in Sorrento brings various summer events, for example the Sorrento summer music festival in which many tourists and Italians from the rest of the country flock to Sorrento to take in the sights and sounds of the festival.

As Sorrento enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, the summer temperatures really begin to hit in May, when the average daily maximum sits at 22 degrees and the minimum falls to a comfortable 12 degrees. By June, summer is well and truly here, with average maximum hitting 27 degrees before rising to 29 degrees in July and August. Minimums in summer range from about 15 to 18 degrees daily, and this is also the driest time of the year.

Average precipitation is at its lowest in July, which only sees 25 mm of rainfall for the month. It is low for the majority of summer, though begins to pick up slightly around the end of August before reaching 81mm in September. Throughout the winter months Sorrento sees in excess of 100mm of rainfall each month, with November generally being the wettest month.

Winters are mild and rarely get extremely cold. The average minimum, which will occur at night time, is 3 to 4 degrees but daily maximums sit at a pleasant 12 to 13 degrees. January is generally the coldest month.

While slightly chillier and you probably won’t be able to take in the benefits of the coastal location by swimming, winter can still be a great time to visit, and is particularly good if it is Pompeii you are interested in visited.

Pompeii is a partially buried ancient Roman city out of Sorrento and as you head toward Naples. Pompeii and its sister city of Herculaneum were destroyed, and completely buried, on August 24 79AD when the nearby volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, completely burying the two cities under masses of lava and volcanic ash. The cities have since been rediscovered and dug up and tourists are able to wander through the ancient streets which were perfectly preserved under the lava.

Pompeii can get excruciatingly hot in the peak of summer, particularly if the region is being hit by a heatwave, and wandering the stone streets which absorb the heat can be some what of a challenge.. so if you want to spend a good day exploring Pompeii than winter or Spring are excellent times to visit.
