Weather Overview for Pineda de Mar

Pineda de Mar enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters. Situated on the south of Spain’s Costa Brava in the region of Catalunya, the resort shares its climate with those that surround it; weather conditions are very similar to those in other Costa Brava resorts such as Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Calella.

Summer, from June till September, sees average highs in the mid 20s rising to a peak of 29°C in July and August. Luckily, humidity is low; nights cool to around 17°C and the afternoon heat is tempered by a sea breeze. The reliable wind and clear seas make for perfect sailing and windsurfing conditions. Rainfall levels are very low but some short storms do occur in the season. The sun shines for much of the day but it is not as sunny as in more southerly resorts; Pineda de Mar sees nine hours per day in July while Nerja, in the south, sees twelve.

Autumn, in October and November, is cooler and wetter but initially very pleasant. Early October still sees temperatures in the low 20s and night times don’t get down to 10°C. But conditions quickly change; the average high temperature falls below 20°C from around mid October and nights become chilly. The average high in November is 16°C though the sea is still warm enough for swimming. Autumn and spring are the wettest seasons though still receive less than 100 mm of rain per month on average.

Winter, from December till February, is cool and sometimes cold, though much warmer than the British winter you may be trying to escape. The average high temperature gets down to 13°C while the average low sits at 2°C. It can get down to freezing and frosts are not rare. Precipitation is low but showers are to be expected. The sky is often overcast; the sun is only reliable for around five hours per day. While winter is just about suitable for walking holidays, it is nowhere near warm enough to lie on the beach in the pursuit of a tan.

In spring, from March till May, the warmth quickly returns but so does the rain. This is quite an unpredictable season with temperatures fluctuating and showers coming and going. In March the average high temperature increases to 17°C and from the beginning of April, which has an average high of 19°C, day times can be blustery and cool or sunny with the temperature peaking in the mid 20s. May is the wettest month in the year, still not receiving a huge amount of rain, but it is also pleasantly warm with an average of 23°C. The sea does not get quite warm enough for swimming until the end of the season.

The period from late spring to early autumn offers warm weather and many hours of sunshine. If you prefer slightly cooler temperatures and are happy to accept the chance of a little rain, the months either side of the summer peak are still lovely and receive smaller crowds.

Northern regions of Spain are generally slightly cooler and less arid than southern regions. Pineda de Mar benefits from its position on the Mediterranean which moderates extremes of temperature. The nearby Pyrenees Mountains protect the coast from northeast winds carrying cold and wet weather conditions. The Pyrenees create a natural boundary between Spain and France. Sitting right between Girona and Barcelona, Pineda de Mar is around 50 km from each city.

Pineda de Mar’s exceptional weather make it the perfect place for outdoor pursuits for most of the year. Water sports are a favourite during the long summer while trekking and cycling are best in slightly cooler weather. The nearby Montnegre Natural Park is beautiful in all seasons and can provide a relief from the summer heat at higher altitudes.
