Paralimni enjoys a dry Mediterranean climate with hot summers, mild winters and plenty of sunshine. The resort is in the Greek controlled area of Cyprus inland from the island’s east coast. Nearby to the south is the clubber’s mecca Agia Napa. Cyprus sits in the Mediterranean Sea, far east of Greece, north of Egypt, just south of Turkey and west of Syria.

Summer, from June till September, sees temperatures soaring under the relentless sun. Twelve hours of sunshine per day is the norm during peak months. The average high temperature of July and August is 31°C but it regularly gets into the mid 30s. Away from the sea and with its windmill-powered irrigation system in neglect, there is little to temper the heat of the summer. Even the north-westerly winds that blow across Cyprus are largely blocked by the mountains. This also means the area receives low rain levels throughout the year; near-drought summer conditions lead to a very barren landscape.

Autumn, in October and November, is wetter, cooler and generally much more pleasant. Rainfall levels increase but the short storms are more likely to provide relief than irritation. The average high temperature cools to the high 20s in October and the low 20s in November. Night times are refreshingly cool.

Winter, from December till February, is mild and rainy. The average high temperature falls to a low of 15°C in January when the night time low is around 7°C.  December is the wettest month though the whole season in generally unpredictable; it can sometimes get quite cold, even down to freezing, but on other days it warms up so much that you might find yourself sitting outside in a t-shirt. Further up in the mountains snow often falls.

Spring, from March till May, is the best time to visit this town; it heats up, the sun comes out, the plants bud and blossom. From mid March temperatures in the low 20s are to be expected; in May the average high is already an optimum 25°C. Conditions are generally more comfortable than the boiling peak of the summer.

Paralimni owes its climate to its inland location on Cyprus. While it is not a vast distance from the sea, the Med’s moderating effects are little felt. Sitting on the southwest coast it is in the area of Cyprus that receives the least of the cooling winds and rain, while in the direct path of southerly weather systems blowing up from Egypt. The city was once located on the coast but was relocated as a precautionary measure against pirate attack.
