Mykonos is a major holiday island in Greece thanks to its great weather, great beaches and vibrant nightlife. The island is part of the Cyclades in the middle of the Aegean Sea and is situated about 100 miles south east of Athens. The main town on the island shares the same name as the island itself but is often known as Chora, meaning ‘the Town’ in Greek.

Mykonos enjoys an incredible amount of sunshine – there are over 300 sunny days per year on the island in fact. Most of the rainfall is confined to the winter months.

Summer

The great summer weather is what has made Mykonos such a well loved holiday destination. July and August are the peak summer months and the island is teeming with people here to soak up the sun and hit the many bars and nightclubs. These months average 25C to 26C and daily highs are often in the 30s. Peak summer can often see temperatures soaring into the mid 30s and above during particularly strong heat waves. Thankfully the coastal areas- where most people stay – are relieved by cooling sea breezes so it doesn’t feel so hot. And you’ve also got the perfect Mediterranean waters to jump into for a cool off! The ‘Meltimi’ wind is very famous in the area and blows most commonly in the summer months bringing cool refreshing breezes to the island. Rainfall is very low in summer. You may see some but it is very infrequent. Sunshine really does rule the day in the summer months.

Autumn

Autumn can be an excellent time to visit. September enjoys great weather and can really be classed as a summer month, since daytime temperatures are frequently in the high 20s and the thermometer never falls much below the high teens. The month also enjoys an excellent 11 sunshine hours per day on average. October is pretty warm too and temperatures in the low 20s are frequent. Rainfall is on the increase, however, and October heralds the start of the rainy season on the island. The month itself averages nearly 170mm. However, since a lot of this falls in short heavy showers there is also plenty of sunshine too – October averages a healthy 8 hours of sunshine per day. November sees temperatures cool somewhat but you can still enjoy daytime highs in the upper teens. It usually stays just above double figures at night too. Like October, there’s also a fair amount of rain.

Winter

Winter can best be described as mild but wet. Heavy winds from the south often blow in winter bringing windy stormy weather and often electrical storms. Winter temperatures can be cool - down to 5 or 6C – but they rarely get much colder. This is mainly due to the temperate surrounding seas that never get cooler than 16C. Winter can be quite wet; most of the yearly rainfall occurs between October and February. It is also a windy time to and winter months can see a fair amount of stormy weather. On the other hand, when the storms move on, there is a good deal of sunshine and temperatures can rise into the low teens. Winter days see an average of 4-5 sunshine hours per day.

Spring

I think spring is a great time to visit Mykonos, particularly late on the season as both air and sea temperatures are warm without being scorching hot, there is plenty of sunshine, and the beaches are much quieter than in mid-summer. If it’s the nightlife you’re after however, you are probably better waiting until the peak summer months. Early spring sees temperatures varying between the high single figures and the mid teens. Rainfall is certainly on the decrease but don’t be surprised to see some downpours. As the season wears on, temperatures quickly rise and rainfall quickly dries up. By May you can be enjoying great sunny weather almost every day; daily highs are often in the mid teens and rainfall averages just 35mm.
