Marmaris, a port city in south-west Turkey on the Mediterranean coast, has a Mediterranean climate with long, hot, humid summers and mild, rainy winters.

Summer in Marmaris can be unbearably hot with temperatures regularly getting into the high 30s and rarely peaking in the 40s. July and August are the hottest months and see around fourteen hours of sunshine a day. Marmaris’s population of 18,000 explodes around this time and reaches between 300,000 and 400,000. The relentless heat and overcrowding can put tourists at risk of dehydration. Heat, sunshine and minimal rain can be guaranteed between May and October; many may prefer to avoid Marmaris during July and August as the resort is so pleasant out of the very peak of the season. Daytime temperatures already reach 20°C by April and can remain as hot as that into early November. The average number of hours of sunshine per day doesn’t go below five all year round.

Spring and autumn merge with winter and comprise a mild wet season from November to March. Daytime temperatures in November still average around 19°C which gradually decreases to a cool but not freezing 13°C in January, Marmaris’s coldest month. The evenings can get down to 13°C throughout October after which it gets steadily colder, reaching a night time average of 5°C in January and February. The night time temperature creeps up through March and May when it is around 13°C, then jumps up to 18°C in June. Midwinter temperatures are possibly too cool for a real beach holiday, though mild enough to be in a t-shirt in the sun, and might be a better time for exploring the area. Tanning and swimming are still possible but for reduced periods in the day. Heavy rains occur, usually restricted to intense bursts, which sometimes causes dangerous flash floods in prone areas. December is the wettest month.

Marmaris sits at the meeting place of the Mediterranean and Agean seas. Its surrounding mountains retain much of the heat of the day and shelter the bay turning Marmaris into a suntrap. The resort is a chosen destination for holiday-makers year round.
