Limassol is geographically the largest city in Cyprus, but second largest based on population. It is location on the southern coast of the island means it enjoys a typical, pleasant picturesque Mediterranean climate of long hot summers and short mild winters. The popular summer months see hot days and balmy nights where the winter months see mild rainfall and mild temperatures.

Due to its location on the southern coast it is the regions main industrial and maritime area. Limassol holds the biggest port in the Mediterranean transit trade and has therefore become an important tourism, trade and service-providing centre for the area.

Cyprus’ climate is fairly predictable which makes it easier to choose a time of year to visit as you can base your time frame depending on what sort of experience you wish to have.

SUMMER

Summer, as in many similar Mediterranean destinations, is the longest season and sees the area average temperatures in the mid to high 20’s. The clear blue skies meet the crystal blue water where tourists are enjoying various water sports and scuba diving. Water activities offer a cooling break as temperatures in Limassol can often reach mid 30’s (Celcius).

Summer days see 12 hours of sunshine beginning from May and continuing through until October. June, July and August see average highs of 27 to 29 degrees. However, due to its proximity to the ocean Limassol is much cooler than other Cyprian inland destinations.

Many tourists tend to pass through Limassol on the way to more popular destinations such as Akrotiri so the city is somewhat untouched by the streams of tourism that have affected nearby spots. As a result it has been able to uphold the traditions of Cypriote life: meze restaurants, wine and beer cellars, places to sit outside and to watch the passing action.

Evening temperatures stay around the low 20’s which makes for very enjoyable weather to take in these local traditions. Like many Mediterranean coastal resorts, the area is cooled by evening sea breezes which offer much needed relief from the day time heat.

Limassol is known for its famous wine festivals held in August so these is a popular time to visit, though the temperatures can soar to high 30’s during this time so a hat, sunscreen and lightweight clothing will be needed.

WINTER

After a short autumn through November the milder temperatures and abundant rainfall of December through February begins. Winter in Cyprus has a tendency to also be short lived, though not as short as the shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn which you can blink and miss if you’re not careful!

Winter in throughout Cyprus is
characterized by sporadic periods of dry sunny weather interspersed with wet windy weather. While December and January are the wettest months they still only average 17-19 days of rain across the two months. The area still averages about 6 to 7 hours of sunlight per day throughout winter.

The average minimum temperatures throughout the winter months sit at 6, 7 and 8 degrees Celcius through December, January and February respectively. The average minimum during the season is a fairly mild 8 degrees which makes Limassol an enjoyable winter destination.

SPRING/AUTUMN

As previously mentioned the ‘seasons’ of Spring and Autumn are very short in Cyprus. February does bring beautiful fields in spring wildflowers and luscious greenery begins to blossom by the end of March but this quickly turns into summer and the tourist season begins.
