January Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

What's the Weather Like in Ko Lanta in January

January is one of the most popular months of the year to visit Ko Lanta. Directly in the middle of the peak season, the wet weather of the previous months is likely to be over, while the heat of the peak summer sun has yet to arrive. This means plenty of warm, summer days and clear blue skies for this part of Thailand.

January in Ko Lanta is typified by average temperatures of 29°C throughout the month, with plenty of sunshine.

The beaches will be busy and the sea will be warm. But now that the strong winds of the low season have dissipated, there is much less likelihood of refuse on the beach hindering your enjoyment.

Temperature

Average high temperatures are likely to reach 33°C on an almost daily basis. Although temperatures in January did reach a peak of 36°C in January 1998, so it is always wise to be prepared for hotter weather.

At night, conditions are still very warm and though there is no real nightlife on the island, there are still plenty of open air bars and cafes to enjoy. Or many people just head to the beach.

Usually, temperatures do not fall below an average of 24°C at this time of the year. However, sometimes the night wind can produce air temperatures in the high teens. It is therefore wise to pack an extra layer, for the late evening, especially if you are going to be close to the shore.

Rainfall

It is possible for January to experience some rainfall. Though the rain tends to die out in December, there have been years when January has seen some wet days. Forecasted rain levels for January are just 10mm for the entire month, expected to fall over two days. However, if this rain does fall, it is likely to do so at night, ensuring any trip to Ko Lanta in January is wall to wall sunshine.

Hit the Beach

Khlong Dao Beach

January is a great time to experience beach life in Ko Lanta, and Khlong Dao Beach is one of the most popular on the island. The area boasts more than 3km of beautiful white sand, which is always full of people at this time of the year. With shallow water at the edge, it's ideal for families too. It is one of the more developed beaches, offering plenty of restaurants and cafes along its edge. But because it is so popular there are never enough sunbeds and umbrellas to go round. So make sure you take your own protection from that scorching January sun.

Kantiang Bay

For those that like their beaches a little quieter, but still very family friendly, Kantiang Bay on the south side of the island, is a great alternative. The water is calm and very clear and the beach goes on for miles. You will need some shoes to get over the rocks on the water's edge. But with plenty of facilities surrounding the sand, fun can be had by all.
