Weather Overview for Alcudia
Alcudia, the main tourist
centre on Majorca (Mallorca), one of
The Alcudian summer is long and hot, peaking around
30°C in August, with the potential for a full eight months of bikini-suitable
days. Temperatures reach 19°C as early as April and remain as high as 18°C well
into November, but these drop relatively sharply in the evenings and the summer
proper can be said to last from May till October. From May till September
rainfall is minimal and Alcudia is at its driest. July and August see the
highest influx of tourists with the hottest of Alcudia’s weather.
Spring
and autumn days see temperatures of
around 17°C, relatively much cooler than the blistering summer heat but still
enjoyable. Springtime is seen by some as the perfect time to visit due to its
increasing temperatures and smaller crowds. However, night time temperatures
require some extra layers; March temperatures get down to 5°C, slipping up to
8°C by April. While year round Alcudia gets little rain, October is its wettest
month and temperatures gradually decrease, averaging 8°C lows on November
nights. The rain in October and November brings the Alcudian countryside to
life with a burst of new growth after the arid summer.
Winter
days rarely drop below 10°C. Its coldest months, January and February, see an
average high of 14°C and a night time low of 4°C. Sunshine is less to be relied
upon though it still averages around five hours a day.
Alcudia is described as
having an ideal year-round climate due to its flawless, lengthy summers and
extremely mild winters, making it a year-round destination for tourists. The
weather enables water sports, amongst other tourist activities such as
exploring the Roman monuments and horse riding, to continue throughout the
seasons. This is due to its situation in Mediterranean Sea and the protection
from wind and rain by the Serra da Tramuntana mountain range, which stretches
along the north-west side of
Alcudian tradition makes
use of its reliable weather with festivals falling throughout the year. On
January 16th and 17th is the celebration of Sant Antoni Abat, the
patron saint of animals, traditionally pictured holding a pig. Holy Week,
falling either in February, March or April, is Alcudia’s Easter celebration
during which huge religious processions take place. From June 25th
to the 29th Feste de Patronal de Sant Pere, the patron saint of
sailors, is held. Romeria a la Verge de la Victoria, or Mare de Déu de la Victòria,
takes place on the 1st and 2nd July. Starting on July 25th
is Alcudia’s most important festival celebrating its patron Saint James with
concerts, theatre and dance amongst many other activities. Bizarrely, August 24th
is dedicated to a Chinese Lantern festival involving un-Chinese melon lanterns
and Majorcan songs. The Fira, a trade fair, is held during the first week in
October. December holds the usual Christmas and New Year ’s Eve celebrations.
