Agen is a town of 30
000 + people that lies within the beautiful Aquitaine region in the South of France.
Situated upon the river Garonne, Agen lies 84 miles south east of Bordeaux and is known
fondly as ‘the capital of the prune!’
Lying in the south
of France,
Agen enjoys a mild climate of warm to hot summers and short mild winters.
Summers in Agen can
see daily maximums reach into the high 20’s. June typically sees daily highs of
24°c and lows of 13 degrees, before heating up to highs of 26°c by the
peak summer months of July and August. Agen is still close enough to the ocean
to be tempered by the coastal winds, albeit obviously not as much as its
coastal counterparts. As a result Agen will experience warmer summers than
towns that lie closer to the Med or the Atlantic.
September continues on the glorious summer weather with daily highs of 23°cand
and average daily temperature of 18 degrees.
September can be a great month to visit the region as it
follows the peak tourist season of Summer and the weather is still enjoyable. You
can take in the sights and sounds of the region without fighting the hoards of
tourists that flock to the area in the months of July and August.
Winters are relatively mild, short and not too cold. November through to
January is when the region receives its greatest rainfall. The average minimum
for December is 2 degrees moving up to an average maximum of 9 degrees. The
mercury begins to rise slightly come the first month of Spring- March, and an
average daily tempature of 9 degrees is enjoyed.
Much like
the majority of France, one of the best times to visit the Aquitaine region is
in the Spring time when the flowers and trees are blooming are you escape the
throngs of tourists and hot weather that go hand in hand with summertime, and
the rainfall and cooler temperatures of the winter months.
Whatever
time of the year you choose to visit you can still manage to take in the beauty
of the region. In addition to lying within the popular wine region, Agen’s
appeal is completed by the towns leafy, twisting streets that are lined with
distinctive brick houses scattered across the banks of the River Garonne.
