Met Office scientist, Edward Pope, will be speaking at Utility Week’s Gas and Power Asset Management Conference on 8 July 2014, discussing the ways in which weather and climate change impact on UK infrastructure.
From extreme rainfall to heat waves, weather significantly affects the utilities industry. With climate change predicted to increase the likelihood of significant weather events, the industry needs access to accurate and timely weather and climate information.
Dr Pope, who is presenting during Session Three: The Role of Innovation in Transforming Your Asset Management Strategy, will discuss Met Office science and capabilities, giving examples of how the Met Office works with commercial and government organisations to help them understand their sensitivities to weather and climate change, and to adapt their operations.
He said: “I am delighted to be able to speak about such an important theme and outline how our science and capabilities can help mitigate weather impacts on the UK infrastructure.”
The Met Office has worked closely with the utility industry to develop a range of services that meet specific needs, including products and services to help with operations and resource management, as well as asset management and long-term infrastructure planning. These services can help the industry face the challenges that severe weather presents.
