Weather Overview for Turgutreis
Turgutreis enjoys a spectacular Mediterranean climate with the
extended summers of the Turkish coast. High temperatures last from May till
October and almost no rain falls during this period. The winters are rainy but
mild and brief. Turgutreis is a resort town in the southwest of
Summer, from May till October, sees temperatures rising from an average high of 25°C in May to a peak of 32°C in July and August before getting back down to the pleasant mid 20s in October. Low humidity and a strong breeze helps to make the heat more bearable, but the peak months can still be uncomfortable. Night time temperatures are usually 10°C below the day time highs due to the reliably clear sky and aridity of the season. The sun positively flaunts itself throughout the summer, showing off for an immodest fourteen hours per day in July. October receives eight hours per day; May and September receive eleven; June and August see thirteen. It is very rarely cloudy and rain is highly unlikely apart from at the very beginning and end of the season. The northwest meltemi wind, sought by sailors, surfers and windsurfers alike, blows throughout the season and is strongest in July and August. It generally builds till the afternoon then recedes leaving the area calm at night. This area is also affected by the west zephyr wind.
Autumn, in November and December, is warm with cool nights. The average high drops to 19°C in November and 16°C in December, while night time lows drop to 12°C then 9°C. Sunshine levels reduce dramatically, though it is hardly gloomy. It does become quite unpredictable as rainfall increases and temperatures fluctuate depending on the sun. The sea cools down and is a bit too chilly for swimming from the end of November.
Winter, in January and February, is mild with cold nights. The average high drops to 14°C and the average lows gets down to 7°C, though with wind chill it can feel much cooler. January is the wettest time of year, though only just wetter than December, after which rainfall starts to reduce.
Spring, in March and April, warms up quickly. The average high increases to 17°C in March and 20°C in April. By mid April temperatures in the low 20s are seen regularly which is more than warm enough for shorts and t-shirt. As rainfall falls to very low levels the clouds disappear and the sun starts to come out for longer and longer, staying out for nine hours per day in April.
Turgutreis is actually slightly cooler and wetter than resorts on the south side of the Bodrum peninsula due to the zephyr wind which is blocked from the south side by the mountainous terrain of the western coast. This is, however, preferable; there is such a thing as ‘too hot’.
