The typical weather featured in Rotterdam is fairly temperate and enjoyable. Rotterdam;
the second largest city in the Netherlands is partially situated below sea
level and benefits from relatively warmer weather than other cities further
north or inland such as Amsterdam. Rotterdam
experiences warm summers, cool winters and substantial amounts of rainfall year
round. Many Dutch residents choose to reside in Rotterdam
throughout the peak summer months as herds of tourists roam the streets of Amsterdam.
Summer
A typical summer in Rotterdam
sees average temperatures of 19°C to 20°C and on occasions reaches the mid twenties. The weather
during this time is rarely ever over hot and even during the hottest months of
July and August it is unlikely you will feel the uncomfortable humidity common
to most major cities in the summer. The summertime sees many tourists head to the
city’s favourable artificial beach next to the Nieuwe Maas shipping canal on
Boompjeskade to take advantage of the longer hours of sunshine..
Autumn
The overall climate in Rotterdam
can be very unpredictable, particularly during the cooler months of autumn. November
commonly sees quite bizarre weather as one moment it can be sunny and the next
can become cloudy and overcast. Average temperatures during autumn start from
highs of 18°C in September down to lows of 4°C in November. Although rainfall during this time is rather
high, it can also be quite erratic.
Winter
The winter months in Rotterdam
have much less to offer and the first month of the season sees high amounts of rainfall
and unpleasing temperatures. Nevertheless precipitation levels decrease significantly
in January and February. Average daylight and sunshine hours are reduced by
more than half of what is featured in the summer and the chance of frosts and
snow become more common. Although temperatures do hang around 4°C or lower, it is not likely for the city to see the climate
drop sub-zero. Alike any season there are still benefits from visiting Rotterdam in the winter
months as the price of accommodation is much cheaper and crowds are lessened.
Spring
By the end of March it’s fair to say that spring is well and
truly underway as temperatures rise to double digits and sunshine hours
increase. Similar to autumn the weather can still be very impulsive as one day
the skies will be blue filled with sunlight whereas the next can be dull and
rainy. If you’re visiting during the spring it’s always a good idea to pack
clothing that covers all possibilities allowing for both warm and cool days.
