May is a prime time to visit Palma in Majorca, Spain. The weather is starting to warm up very nicely and spring has well and truly sprung. The city starts to hot up in terms of enjoyable events, too. From free outdoor concerts to sporting events, spring fairs to dining under the stars, Palma is magical in May.

The sound of music

Don’t miss The Corpus, a series of free musical concerts taking place across the city of Palma from 24th May to 2nd June. The concerts are held in various historical and cultural locations – all of which provide a suitably picturesque backdrop for a variety of musical genres including classical and jazz. The dulcet tones of the Mayurqa choir in the majestic Bellver castle is just one of many highlights.

Hit the streets

With a dizzying array of concerts, events, competitions and processions, The Manacor Spring Fair keeps Palma buzzing from the end of May into early June – you just need to keep up to speed with what’s going on and take your pick. There’s something for everyone with craft fairs, flower shows, equestrian events, family entertainment and cooking demonstrations taking place across the city. Plenty of eclectic entertainment keeps the atmosphere on the streets fun and lively, with traditional parades featuring ‘gegants’ (giants) and decorated floats, live music, dancing and the spectacular ‘night of fire’.

Get moving

Fancy mastering some tricky Zumba moves, perfecting your snorkelling skills, circuiting a velodrome and seeing if you’ve got what it takes to stay atop a slack line for more than two seconds? Head to The IX Fira de l’Esport and you can try all this – and more. Open for three days (24-16 May 2013), this fun family-friendly event takes place in Palau Municipal sports centre and St Hugo swimming pool complex in Palma.

A taste of Majorca

For a culinary tour of Majorca, beeline to Lloseta Food Market, which takes place every Sunday from May through to September. Lloseta is a tiny town nestled on the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains. Located 16 miles outside of Palma, Lloseta offers charm – and a veritable feast of fresh local food – by the bucket load. Perfect for stocking up for perfect picnics and scrumptious souvenirs for foodie friends and family back home.

Go star grazing

Classy Nikki Beach restaurant boasts an idyllic beachfront setting just outside of Palma, so while you enjoy a delicious candlelit 3-course set meal with fine wine and live music, you’ll also be able to star gaze – look out for Osiris and Orion. Dining al fresco doesn’t get much more romantic than this. Make the most of complimentary entry to Nikki Beach’s nightclub and dance the night away…
