Weather lowdown

May is a wonderful time to visit Calis Beach, especially for those who don't enjoy crowds, but want to enjoy the mild, early summer weather that seems to grace every day now the warmer temperatures have arrived. You can easily live in your flip flops at this time of year, without the need to wrap up warm every time you leave your hotel!

Whilst still quiet in and around the resort, there are many hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions opening up, especially towards the end of the month when most things will be open. On top of this, you can expect an average temperature of around 20°C, which can reach a very warm 25°C as an average high temperature throughout the month. Another major bonus is that the evenings are warming up gradually too, and this particular month experiences an average low of around 14°C during the evening hours, which whilst still requiring a jacket, is certainly warmer than the previous months of March and April, and the end of the month will feel very warm indeed.

Rain is possible, but much less likely and also less in amount, with an average precipitation level of around just 11mm throughout the month, which will generally only affect 4 days to some degree or another. Beach time is now very possible, with around 13 hours of sunshine per day, making that tan a definite possibility. Further good news is that the sea is warming up too, with an average sea temperature of around 20°C. You can finally now enjoy the many water-sports on offer, including boat trips, fishing, diving, swimming, and general beach days with the family.

For cheap holidays in the sun, away from extremely high temperatures, and with less in the way of crowds, this is the ideal time to visit this beautiful resort in the south of Turkey.

Where to stay

May is a very popular time to visit Calis Beach, and the wonderful weather is only part of the reason! Malhun Hotel will offer you everything you need for a relaxing stay in the resort, as well as giving you an all-inclusive option too, which is perfect for travelling as a family, with children. The outdoor dining area offers fantastic views over the sea, including those beautiful sunsets.

Alternatively, Daphne Residence is a self-catering or B&B choice, still with those amazing views, which gives you a homely place to stay during your visit. This is a comfortable accommodation option, and the on-site playground is great for tiring out children before bed.

Nazar Garden Hotel is another option to take into consideration, with half board dining on offer. This is situated around 2km from the centre of the resort, so offers a quiet base, however it is only 500m from the beach, and public transport links are very close by. A family friendly option, there is an on-site restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating available.

What to do

Calis Beach is hotting up in May, however the major temperatures are yet to come, which means getting around is much easier. Saklikent Gorge is a beautiful part of the country, and is actually the longest gorge in Turkey. The nature and wildlife around here is second to none, and there are many hiking and walking opportunities, which are perfect for this time of year. Again, many excursion companies will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the heart of the action, before bringing you back again, such as Travel to Fethiye tours.

If you love history and culture then there are many Lycian ruins around the resort, which are dripping in historical importance. Kayakoy is a very well preserved set of ruins, which are situated near to Fethiye. It's advisable to head here early, because even milder temperatures can seem hotter when you're at the top of a hill! It's also a good idea to wear sensible footwear, as the ground can be a little uneven and rocky at times.

Alternatively, Tlos is a very popular set of Lycian ruins, which gets very busy during the peak summer months, so now is the ideal time to visit as there are less crowds. You'll find temples, churches, tombs, and a Roman amphitheatre, and if you can go with a guided tour then you will learn so much more about the importance and history of this ancient town.

Hit the beach

The beginning of the summer season is the ideal time to visit some of the more popular places before the major crowds come, and one of those beaches is certainly Olu Deniz's beautiful Blue Lagoon. Part of a national park, there is a small entrance fee to get in, but it is more than worth it.

The waters are crystal clear, the view stunning, and the sand is paradise white. If you want to enjoy a few hours away from it all, in total peace and serenity, this is for you.

Restaurants & nightlife

By the time May comes around, most restaurants are fully open for business, which means more options for night-life. VOJO Restaurant has a laid-back café-style vibe, with large portions and a huge menu to go with it. The fish and chips here are legendary, so check those out.

If you're looking for a chilled-out evening with some live music then try Guitar Bar. Again, a large menu greets you, with many Turkish dishes to try. Alternatively, The Brothers Restaurant & Bar is renowned for its British dishes, and particularly popular for its huge English breakfasts, with all the trimmings to fill you up for your busy day ahead.
