Cassandra Hotel

The Cassandra Hotel is a modest, low-budget option for travelers not wishing to spend $300 a night for a downtown room.  Cassandra Hotel's location in Collingwood does give you easy access to Highway 1A and is only a couple of blocks from the nearest SkyTrain station.  Rooms are simple with basic furnishings but still maintain a wonderful level of comfort.  Upgraded rooms feature microwaves, minifridges, and mountain views.  The hotel staff will treat you with the utmost hospitality and make your stay a great one.  The hotel does have a small heated pool, sauna, and a casual Korean restaurant.

Beaches in Vancouver in June

English Bay Beach

Warmer temperatures finally make the beaches bearable, and you'll have plenty to choose from in Vancouver.  English Bay Beach is at the southwest side of Stanley Park and is one of the largest beaches in the Vancouver area.  Lifeguards are always on duty during the summer.  English Bay Beach features washrooms, umbrella and chair rentals, volleyball courts, and kayak rentals.  If you're traveling with your best friend, English Bay Beach also has an off-leash area for dogs.  There are also concession stands and the Cactus Club Café if you're hungry and didn't bring anything to eat with you.  English Bay Beach is a part of Vancouver's historic 28-kilometer seawall.

Bars and Restaurants

Bistro Sakana

There's no shortage of Asian restaurants in Vancouver and they're all delightful.  That especially goes for the affordably-priced Bistro Sakana in Yaletown.  This trendy sushi restaurant features both traditional and artisan rolls, which can also be made with brown rice for a healthier option.  Sashimi and tempura options are also numerous.  The tapas menu will give you even more variety with spicy scallop kabobs, yam tempura fries, pork gyoza, and beef tataki.  It should also be mentioned that Bistro Sakana has the largest selection of sake in Vancouver.  Bistro Sakana is open for lunch during the week from 11:30AM to 2:45PM and for dinner Monday thru Saturday from 5PM to 9:45PM (10:45PM on Saturday).

Kingyo

Another Asian restaurant definitely worthy of your consideration is Kingyo, located in the West End.  This moderately-priced Japanese izakaya, or pub, has earned nothing but rave reviews from all who dine here.  A crowd favorite is the stone-grilled kobe beef, served to your table while the beef is still cooking on the stone (Kingyo would like to remind you not to touch the stone).  Other delectable items on the menu include chopped octopus ceviche, sashimi, sushi, noodle bowls, and sweetened balsamic beef rib.  Kingyo is open for lunch daily from 11:30AM until 2:30PM and for dinner from 5:30PM until 11:30PM (midnights on weekends).

Bin 941 Tapas Parlour

The casual and always busy Bin 941 Tapas Parlour is located in Davie Village near the West End and Yaletown.  Bin 941 specializes in affordable artisan tapas dishes meant for sharing with everyone.  The ambience is warm and inviting though at times may seem crowded as busy as it is.  The "tapatizers", as the restaurant refers to them, are all made in-house with local and sustainable ingredients that rotate seasonally.  Just to give you an idea of what you'll find here, you can choose from steak & frites with maple chipotle sauce, crab cakes with pickled vegetables, grilled asparagus with poached egg, and pan seared gnocchi in a pesto sauce.  Bin 941 features a small but amazing selection of hand-picked wines from around the world.  Bin 941 is open every day from 5PM until 11PM.

Brix & Mortar

Yaletown is home to many chic restaurants in renovated historic buildings.  Brix & Mortar is a wonderful option for dinner any night of the week.  Brix & Mortar serves modern West Coast Canadian cuisine.  The classic dining room will give you a feeling of luxury, or you can dine in the glass-covered courtyard.  The menu has both a la carte options and set menus.  All food is locally-sourced.  Appetizers include prosciutto wrapped scallops, pork belly, and liver pate.  For main courses you can choose from hanger steak with fingerling potatoes, wild salmon with radish salad, and pork chop with bacon & kimchi fried rice, to name a few.  The knowledgeable staff will help you pick the appropriate wine pairings from their extensive wine list.  Brix & Mortar is open every day at 5PM and reservations are accepted.

Things to do in Vancouver in June

Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival

If you've never been to a dragon boat festival you're in for a treat.  The Vancouver Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival is typically held in mid to late June and lasts for three days.  It has the honor of being named North America's largest competitive racing festival.  The boat races themselves are astonishing to watch, as crews race in long, colorful, ornate boats at the cadence of the drummer at the stern.  There's more to the festival than the races.  Opening day features live music and demonstration races.  On Saturday teams from around the world compete for the International Cup.  The championship races are held on Sunday.  Throughout the weekend you'll find food trucks, beverage tastings, various forms of entertainment, and games for the kids.  The festival is held at Creekside Park and False Creek; check the website for dates.

Gastown Shops & Restaurants

Gastown is one of Vancouver's oldest neighborhoods and still feels that way today.  It was founded in the late 19th century by a sailor named Gassy Jack Deighton, who opened the first saloon in the area.  Today it is a very colorful and lively neighborhood and home to one of the world's only remaining steam clocks.  Gastown is known for an eclectic mix of souvenir shops, chic cafes and bars, and trendy restaurants.  Art admirers will also find numerous small art galleries featuring local and world-renowned artists.  Some of the more popular restaurants include The Old Spaghetti Factory, MeeT in Gastown, Steamworks, and The Flying Pig.  Don't forget to find the statue of Gassy Jack to pay homage.

Stanley Park

One of Vancouver's must-see attractions is Stanley Park, named the Best Park in the World by TripAdvisor in 2014.  Stanley Park is also home of one of the largest urban great blue heron colonies in North America.  Stanley Park is surrounded on three sides by Vancouver Harbour and English Bay, and in total takes up just over 1,000 acres.  It is mostly forested and contains a number of historic buildings.  Modern buildings and attractions include the Brockton Point Interpretive Centre, Malkin Bowl, and the Vancouver Aquarium.  Other attractions include the Vancouver Seawall, miles of hiking trails through dense forest, and a few beaches.

Comox Valley Farmers Market

If you're looking for a delightful day excursion from the city of Vancouver, plan a trip to Comox Valley for their renowned farmers' markets on Vancouver Island.  The summer markets are held on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  You'll find an amazing selection of produce, some of which are certified organic.  Meats include bison, beef, chicken, and lamb.  If you don't have a kitchen to prepare these foods, you can still find a great selection of take-home meals, cheeses, pastas, and skin care products.  Enjoy prepared meals from Japanese and Sri Lankan chefs.  The markets feature live entertainment to spice things up a little and are one of the best-known markets in British Columbia.
