What's the weather like in Palma in Majorca ?
Climate
Palma (Palma de Mallorca) is the main city and port of Majorca in the Balearic Islands in Spain. It lies on the south coast of Majorca and is home to fantastic beaches, a vibrant nightlife and the glorious Mediterranean climate which is so typical of southern coastal Spain; a climate featuring hot dry summers and mild winters. This ideal climate contributes to the resort's immense popularity as a holiday destination. Summers see ideal weather conditions and it remains relatively pleasant throughout winter as well, which is thanks to the warm surrounding waters that keep the temperatures from dropping too low on land.
Activities
The shoulder months of April and May, and October and November (spring and autumn in other words) are some of the best months to visit the city if you're looking to do some outdoor activities. Temperatures are cooler than the beach weather of summer and much more comfortable than in winter. This is also one of the quietest times of the year, as most tourists visit in summer.
The island of Majorca and its capital of Palma are a lively party destination and the hot, extended summers allow revelry to continue through the night for much of the year. Summer weather in Palma
From June through September, the city basks in daily sunshine, with up to 12 or 13 hours of sunshine per day in the peak summer months, and temperatures in the mid-20s and 30°Cs. You may be met with the occasional summer thunderstorm, but these are generally short-lived and can actually prove welcome as a cooling break from the summer heat.
Temperature
June sees average daily highs of 27°C with July and August both averaging 31°C. September is less extreme at 28°C. Nighttime temperatures never drop below 15°C in summer, allowing you to be outside virtually all day (and night, if you wish). Sun cream and a hat are a necessity and in the peak months you may not even be able to handle the heat of the midday sun. As the average temperature in the peak months ranges around 24°C and 25°C, temperatures can occasionally soar up toward 40°C in the afternoons. In these temperatures, siestas become essential.
As June and September enjoy similar temperatures to the two peak summer months, but receive far fewer tourists, some holiday-makers may prefer the moderate days of these months to the scorching summer proper.
Sea Temperature
In Palma, the waterfront is the place to see and be seen and the sea temperature in the region stays relatively warm year round. Averaging 21°C in June and moving up to a bath-like 26°C in August, water sports can be enjoyed all year round.
Rainfall
The city receives little rain all year round and will generally be fine and dry across the seasons, although October sees the greatest average rainfall. July and August are by far the driest months, both receiving only 10mm of rainfall. From June through September, there aren't more than 20 days with precipitation, which leaves about an incredible 100 dry days. If you didn't realise it yet, summer is prime sunbathing and swimming season in this resort.
Autumn weather in Palma
Temperature
The two autumn months of October and November are undoubtedly cooler than the hot summer months, but they are still very, very comfortable. They have a respective average temperature of 19°C and 14°C. In the afternoons, the mercury can still climb to warm highs of 24°C and 19°C respectively, while at night, it drops to respective average lows of 13°C and 8°C. The sea temperature remains warm enough for swimming until the end of October; the start of November marks the end of the swimming season in Palma.
Rainfall
In terms of rainfall, October is the wettest month of the whole year, receiving a total of 70mm of precipitation, which is spread out over 11 days with rainfall. Although it is the wettest month, this does not mean the resort is subject to monsoon-like weather conditions. It merely rains every now and then, after which the skies clear once again. November gets 50mm of rainfall in 12 wet days.
Sunshine Hours
Sunshine decreases drastically in the course of autumn. While October has 8 hours of sunshine per day on averagelready two hours fewer than Septemberovember has 7 hours, although this is more than will be found in northern Europe at this time of the year.
Winter weather in Palma
From December through March, true beach weather is harder to find in Palma and from December through February, you will often find that you need a jacket.
Temperature
December has an overall average temperature of 11°C; January and February are the coldest months of the year with averages around 10°C. Nighttime low averages ranges between 5°C and 6°C this season, while afternoon highs vary from 15°C to 17°C. This means that some days can be pleasantly warm while others are cool, sometimes dropping below 10°C, and wet. Nights are cold and in the middle of winter it can get down to freezing, though this is quite rare.
Rainfall
Winter falls in the wetter half of the year. The total amounts of monthly rainfall range between 40mm and 50mm and the number of days with rainfall range from 8 in February and March to 12 in December. Winter is also the darkest season, with December not having more than 6 hours of sunshine per day on average.
That all being said; the weather conditions in winter in Palma are significantly more pleasant than those in more northerly destinations in Europe.
Spring weather in Palma
Temperature and Sea Temperature
During spring, the weather improves rapidly. Afternoon high temperatures rise from 19°C in April to 23°C in May, while nighttime lows increase from 7°C to 10°C in the course of the season. These temperatures are ideal for outdoor activities, although swimming will still be out of the question, with sea temperatures between 16°C and 18°C.
Rainfall
Rainfall decreases gradually throughout spring, as the weather moves slowly toward the hot, sunny and dry summer season. As rainfall levels drop and the sky gets clearer, the number of daily sunshine hours increases. While April has 10 hours of sunshine per day on average, May already has 12 gloriously sunny hours per day, which is almost the annual maximum. Summer is right around the corner!
