Dubrovnik Beaches in February

Copacabana pebble beach

As it's still winter, February is not the best month to wander Dubrovnik's beaches. Another option is Copacabana pebble beach, popular with tourists and locals alike, but you'll have to take a taxi or a bus out to the area. This beach is likely to have less stormy waters, as its protected by the crescent Seka Bay.

Island of Locrum

If you wish to brave the waters, you can charter a speedboat trip to the island of Locrum. There are a variety of cosy beaches and beautiful coves surrounded by pine trees. You'll find a number of delicious dishes at any of the local tavernas. For a grand place to take your date, try the Lokanda Peskarija in the old harbour for their exceptional seafood dishes. Beginning mid-February, Kopun opens up its doors to serve traditional Croatian dishes with a modern twistor example castrated cockerel in honey and wild orange.

Sugar & Spice

A tasty option for breakfast is Sugar & Spice, a little bakery in the Old Town that sells traditional patisseries. The owner is a chef who makes a mean cheesecake and chocolate torte, and her own jams and marmalades from scratch.

Cafe-Bistro Orlando

Enjoy a morning espresso or afternoon coffee at Café-Bistro Orlando, located on the pedestrian walkway Stradun. Grab a grappa or try a local herb brandy at the cosy Hard Jazz Caffe Troubadour. You may find your feet tapping in time with the live music. Or enjoy local white wines from the Peljesac Peninsula at the Dionysus Wine Bar.

Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

Many of the city's best bars are located in the hotels, and the Sunset Lounge is no exception. Located in the lobby of the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace outside of the old town, this is an elegant bar with stunning views of the Elaphite Islands. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you'll be able to walk in the footsteps of your favourite actors on King's Landing sans the crowds. Explore all of the Game of Thrones filming locations on your own, or sign up for a guided tour so you don't miss a single famous scene.

Big Onofrio's Fountain

Dubrovnik is a great city to explore with its cobblestone and medieval alleyways. It's sure to captivate any traveller with its stunning old-world charm, stone-clad piazzas and historic staircases. Start your promenade at Big Onofrio's Fountain, a picturesque spot on the west edge of old town, and just wander.

City Walls

Don't miss the panorama walking along the ancient City Walls. The view of the coastline and city is absolutely stunning, so be sure to pack your camera. It's recommended to go early in the morning before the crowds or late evening to watch the exquisite sunset.

The Museum of Modern Art

If it is raining you might want to retreat to the impressive War Photo Limitedn exhibition centre of war and conflict photography. Exhibits change during the season. The Museum of Modern Art is also a good bet for art loversousing nearly 2,500 works, mostly Croatian. Or take your date to the Freedom cinema, a 300-seat auditorium with daily showings of local and international releases. Movies play year-round with subtitles.

Visia Dubrovnik Multimedia Museum

For something completely different, check out the Visia Dubrovnik Multimedia Museum. Opened in 2010, the 35-minute attraction incorporates lasers, music, wind machines, 3-D battle scenes and rumble seats to teach you about the 18th century.

Valentines

Dubrovnik also makes for a great romantic getaway during Valentine's. Follow in the footsteps of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who used to escape to this city during their love affair. It's hard not to feel romance in the air in the old town, full as it is with gorgeous boutiques, private wine bars and pretty cafes. If you'd like to treat your loved one with a unique gift, a good bet is the Pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe, creates hand creams and other toiletries based on ancient recipes.

Head To Lapad

A short taxi ride will take you to the Lapad area, a quiet bay with gorgeous views of green pines, blue seas and intimate cafes. The breakwater Porporela is often referred to as the Lovers' Walk due to its idyllic setting.

Window shoppers might find a home at Modni Kantun, a hidden boutique selling wares, photographs to silver jewellery, by local designers. Or browse the old market of Gunduliceva Poljana square, where you'll find everything from fresh produce to wine to antiques. A neat place to shop for gifts is Lega Lega, a local designer collective that sells everything from t-shirts to notebooks and coasters. For more high-end products, shop at Boutique Croata, which specialises in silk ties presented in boxes and complete with a short "History of the Tie."

If you're in town Sunday you can peak your head in during Mass at St. Blaise's Church. This beautiful domed baroque building is an astonishing architectural beauty, for religious and nonreligious visitors alike.

The Feast of Saint Blaise takes place on February 3rd, his official feast day, with many events taking place during the preceding days.On February 2nd, the Virgin Mary Candlemas, white doves are released in front of the Church of Saint Blaise, located in the beautiful medieval walled city, and the flag of St Blaise is raised on nearby Orlando's Column.

There are a large number of displays of local culture, with colourful displays of banner swirling in full traditional local costume, and a feast where local dishes such as macaroni with meat sauce (or 'dirty' macaroni as it is also known!) and hrostule donuts are served.
