The main national holiday celebrated in September is Genesis tis Theotokou, the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is observed on September 15th all over the country.
In light of this holiday, many visitors choose to travel to Livadi (about 25km from Limenas, the capital of Thassos) to see the Monastery of the Archangel Michael. It was constructed in the 18th century and is beautifully located right on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea.
