You won't get much closer to the beach than the intriguingly-named Shalom Hotel and Relax where you can enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down or come up from the rooftop terrace overlooking Tel Aviv beach. The 51 rooms have sea or city views and four offer a private Jacuzzi bath. Breakfast and light bites are available and cycle hire is free.

Brown Beach House

The Brown Beach House is another hotel with an enviable beachfront location. The design is reminiscent of Miami hotels and the 49 bedrooms and suites continue that theme. Many have balconies and some offer a private outdoor jacuzzi spa. There's a gourmet restaurant onsite as well as a lively bar and a spa. Free bicycles are available to guests.

Vital Hotel, Tel Aviv

The Vital Hotel in central Tel Aviv is popular with business people and tourists alike and is also more affordable as it is set further back from the beach than many of its rivals. It has a large and well-equipped fitness centre and is within walking distance of attractions including the Opera House and Azrieli Centre. Breakfast is available but there is no restaurant for dinner. Rooms are spacious and there is free Wi-Fi.

Artplus

A stone's throw from Tel Aviv beach and the promenade, the Artplus Hotel in Ben Yahuda Street has 58 rooms dedicated to Israeli art, with murals and other works by local artists everywhere. There are free drinks and snacks served in the hotel's plush library each evening and a comfortably-furnished rooftop terrace with views across the marina and out to sea. Guests staying two nights receive a free ticket to the new Tel Aviv Art Museum.

Tel Aviv Beaches in June

Hilton Beach

Named after the nearby hotel, Hilton Beach is ranked as one of the best gay beaches in the world, but it's actually got three unofficial sections and is also popular with all other sections of Tel Aviv society. There is a beach to the north popular with dog walkers and to the south, the surfers dominate, with the gay stretch in the centre. You can also sign up for adult and child kayaking and windsurfing lessons here at the Sea Centre Club. This is a relaxing, friendly, clean and centrally-located choice of beach considered to be one of Tel Aviv's best.

Bars and Restaurants

Brasserie M&R

The stylish and popular Brasserie M&R opposite Rabin Square in central Tel Aviv is a restaurant that never sleeps, as it opens 24 hours a day. The Parisian vibe is strong here with art deco interiors and a menu to match.  There are oysters, salads, steaks and a plat du jour, an extensive French wine list and great cocktails. It's busy day and night and draws many of the great and good of Tel Aviv.

TEDER.FM 

The laid back TEDER.FM in south Tel Aviv is a hipster heaven located in an old gallery. This is a great venue for socialising to the backdrop of great music, with large outside tables, beer served in jugs and pizza made to order. There are regular cinema nights, live music and guest DJs and TEDER.FM broadcasts live from the venue every night.

Barbunia

A Tel Aviv institution for more than 30 years, Barbunia is a family fish restaurant with no delusions of grandeur, from its paper tablecloths to its basic surroundings. The exception is the food and all main courses are served with unlimited salad, fried vegetables, bread and hummus to accompany sea bream or mixed fried shrimps and calamari among others.

North Abraxas

You can down a beer or shot of arak while sitting at the crowded bar and watching your food being prepared and cooked by the team of chefs at the vibrant North Abraxas. Then take your seat to enjoy the fruits of their labours, such as slow-cooked meat, pizzas and vegetarian options. Expect loud singing from the kitchen area while your food is being prepared.

Things to do in Tel Aviv in June

Rabin Square

The location for most of the city's major events from celebrations to protests Rabin Square is the largest public square in Tel Aviv and is spectacularly lit at night when cafes and bars around the edge are full to bursting. The square was originally called Malchei Israel Kings of Israel but was renamed in honour of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin after he was assassinated there in 1995. There's a huge public water fight here every June.

Bialik Museum

Chaim Nachman Bialik was Israel's national poet and the Bialik Museum is a celebration of his life and work in the beautiful setting of the 1920s Arts and Crafts villa that was his home. The décor is plush and much of the furniture is custom-made. There are ceramic tiles which represent Israel's 12 tribes and also zodiac signs and the great man's bedroom, library and study are preserved as they were when he lived there.

Lake TLV

Popular with locals and visitors alike, Begin Park is home to the man-made Lake TLV which is renowned for its world-class class cable-skiing centre, which caters for all ages and abilities, from children to professionals. It's open all-year round and has seven obstacle courses with jumps and stand-up paddle boarding is also available. Activities are supervised and preceded by safety talks. There's an outdoor bar and café.

Tel Aviv Pride

This is a gay-friendly city and the annual Tel Aviv Pride events every June reflect that. The culmination is the huge Pride Parade, which takes place on June 14, 2019 and winds its way through the city to the Charles Clore Garden, where a frenetic beach party brings proceedings to a noisy and celebratory close. There are drag shows, arts events, lots of dancing and lashings of food and drink.
