    Skanes Weather for February 2017

What's the Weather like in Skanes in February

February is mid-winter in Skanes and the Sahel, which means lower temperatures, higher rainfall averages and colder seas. It definitely isn't beach weather. However, thanks to Tunisia's North African climate, it should still be quite temperate and perfect for those sightseeing or outdoor activities which the high summer temperatures prohibit.

In February, the weather is gradually getting warmer; though temperatures remain quite mild. Average temperatures are around 13C, with highs of 17C and lows of 9C; around a degree warmer than January. However the highest ever recorded temperature at this time is 30C, and it isn't uncommon for temperatures to reach the low-twenties by the end of the month. It is still likely to be quite warm. It will feel a lot colder overnight, as temperatures drop significantly in the evening; the lowest ever recorded overnight temperature is just 1C. Sea temperatures are also at their lowest in February and March, at around 15C.

It's a similar story across the north of the country, with average temperatures in Tunis of 13C and highs of 17C. However, Tunis generally sees slightly cooler overnight temperatures, with lows of around 8C. Resorts in the south of Tunisia will be slightly warmer, with average temperatures of 14C on Djerba and the Kerkennah Islands, off the south east coast, and highs of 18C. In El Borma the average daytime temperature is likely to exceed 20C; though again, El Borma is in the Sahara itself, so expect overnight temperatures to drop significantly.

Winter is the rainy season in Skanes and the Sahel. Around 30mm of rainfall over 6 days is expected over the course of the month. Showers are unlikely to be prolonged, however, and any precipitation will probably only consist of a few hours of light drizzle. Towns and resorts further north can expect greater precipitation at this time. Tunis, for example, receives on average rainfall of around 60mm. In the south, it is generally hotter and drier; in Tataouine, around 15mm of rainfall is expected over 3 days is expected in Tataouine, and only 10mm in Tozeur.

There will possibly also be some fog in coastal areas like Skanes, and with the increased rainfall averages there is higher (though still moderate) humidity of around 75%.

    Sunshine Hours

With lower temperatures, increased rainfall averages, and cool sea temperatures, February isn't the best time for a beach holiday in Skanes. However, there are on average 7 hours of sunshine a day and the weather is still quite temperate, so it is the perfect time to make the most of sightseeing and other outdoor activities.

    Skanes Hotels in February

Helya Beach & Spa is a mid-range hotel with excellent facilities, close to the beach and the centre of Skanes. The hotel has a swimming pool and private beach access, as well as offering a range of activities for more active holiday makers.

If you prefer more luxurious accommodation, the four star Hotel Ramada Liberty Resort is a great choice. Recently remodelled, the Liberty Resort offers modern rooms, overlooking either the beach or a beautiful salt lake in the gardens. The Center Balneo has spa, fitness and other wellness programs if you fancy some pampering. And there are a number of sports and other activities on offer, as well as private beach access and a lovely pool.

    Bars and Restaurants

Most of the restaurants in Skanes are confined to the hotels, so you'll need to head into Monastir if you want a change.

Le Pirate, a seafood restaurant on Port de la Peche, has a wide menu and serves a variety of locally-caught fish. It is slightly pricier than some of the other seafood restaurants in the area, but the quality is high, the fish is very fresh, and it's a great choice for a special dinner.

Soprano serves some of the best pizza in Monastir, and is very popular with both locals and tourists. Close to the university, Soprano does attract a younger crowd and it can be quite noisy at the weekends. The menu changes on a regular basis, to reflect the freshest local ingredients and prices are very reasonable.

Things to do in Skanes in February

If you're an extreme sports enthusiast, you'll love sandboarding. It's like snowboarding, but in the absence of any snow in the Sahara, you can board on the dunes instead! Excursions can be booked from your hotel, and instructors are well prepared to deal with both beginners and experienced (i.e. more adventurous) boarders.

Monastir is right on your doorstep, if you fancy a taking in a little culture and history; you can take the train from Skanes, or book a taxi from your hotel. The Ribat, built by Harthama ben Ayan in AD 796, is a must-see. Movie-buffs will recognise the building from its starring role in Monty Python's "Life of Brian" film. It's one of the oldest Arab fortresses in North Africa. On the southeast side, the three-storey Nador tower has spectacular views of the yachting harbour, cemetery, Bourguiba Mausoleum, and roofs of the Medina.

El Djem Amphitheatre, 60km from Monastir, is one of the finest surviving examples of Roman amphitheatre architecture in the world. The monument is wonderfully atmospheric and no trip would be complete without a visit!
