Summer has begun in Sardinia as May arrives, and tourism is springing up everywhere you look in the coastal resorts. The sun is beginning to shine in abundance, with a massive 9 hours of sunshine per day on average, making May the perfect time to grab a cheap break, before the hotter temperatures arrive over the next few months.

On average, you can expect a temperature of 17°C during May, with a high of a very pleasant 22°C, and a low of 12°C during the evenings.

Rain isn't so much of a problem now summer has arrived, with an average of 19mm throughout the month, which only affects around 9 days on average.

Sea Temperature

Whilst swimming and water-sports are very possible now tourism has arrived back in Sardinia for the following few months, the sea averages 17°C during May, which may still be a little chilly for some, but is certainly pleasant enough for a cool down on the hotter days of the month.

Sardinia Hotels In May

It's hard to pinpoint where you should stay when you visit Sardinia, simply because there are so many options, and so many resorts. We keep mentioning Alghero and Costa Smeralda, but that is simply because these are two of the most popular on the island.

Soleado Hotel Alghero

If you are visiting the north, you will probably be staying in Alghero, and in that case, Soleado Hotel Alghero offers beautiful views over Capo Caccia headland.

Grand Hotel Smeraldo Beach

Alternatively, if you're in Costa Smeralda, then the Grand Hotel Smeraldo Beach is the perfect choice. The natural swimming pools are set amongst pastel coloured granite rocks, and really show off the beauty of the area, as well as offering plenty of amenities and facilities.

Sardinia Beaches For May

Costa Smeralda

Now summer season is alive and kicking in Sardinia, the major beach resorts are open for beach day fun. One of those very popular resorts is of course Costa Smeralda, and here you will find countless beaches, some obviously located, some a little hidden away, however those which are hidden away are the gems you need to seek out.

Spiaggia del Principe

Spiaggia del Principe does require you to walk the last ten minutes to reach it, but the walk is more than worth it when you see the white sand and crystal clear water which will greet you at the end of your journey. This is also a good location for snorkelling.

Bars And Restaurants

Il Kaos In Pizzeria

When in Italy it would be a crime not to sample an authentic pizza in its birthplace. You will find countless pizzerias around the island, however Il Kaos In Pizzeria in Alghero offers some of the most mouth-watering pizza flavours you will ever have the grace to taste. This is hugely popular, and the low prices are a major bonus too!

Whynot Restaurant & Live Music

Porto Cervo offers plenty of dining options, usually quite sophisticated and upmarket to go with the feel of the resort, and Whynot Restaurant & Live Music is a great place to spend your evening. The delicious Mediterranean dishes on offer on the large menu will blow your mind, and the surroundings, set in lush gardens, are perfect for enjoying the mild temperatures of this time of year.

San Teodoro / Life Lounge Café

San Teodoro is a popular spot regardless of the time of year also, and Life Lounge Café is equally as popular. Here you will find buffet food, great for sitting down with a cool drink and listening to some music as you chill the hell out after a long day.

Things To Do In Sardinia In May

Now summer season is alive you will no doubt want to visit the beach, but as the waters of the Mediterranean are not at their warmest just yet, spare a little time to get out and explore some of Sardinia's rich history and architecture.

Nuraghi Towers

Nuraghi Towers is a must visit, located close to Alghero in the north of the island. Basically, you will find beehive-shaped, stone buildings dotted around the island in general, but this is the best preserved. The mystery in it is that nobody really knows who built them or why, just that they're quite pretty. See if you can come up with an answer to the riddle!

Visit Sassari

Located in the north west of Sardinia you will find Sassari, which is the oldest city on the island. This is a great place to visit for the day if you're not basing yourself here, and is easily accessible from resorts in the north, such as popular Alghero or Badesi Mare. Sassari is packed with old architecture and history, which makes it a great choice for anyone interested in different building styles. The 15th century cathedral is a must visit, as well as Santa Maria of Bethlehem Church. On top of this you can wander around old piazzas, checking out beautiful old fountains and palaces as you go.

Cavalcata Sarda

If you're in Sassari during the second to last Sunday of the month then stay for Cavalcata Sarda, which is a stunning procession of 3000 horse riders dressed in traditional costume a true treat for the eyes.

Alghero Old Town

If you're staying in Alghero however, head to the old town before the heat gets too much and shop for souvenirs. This is a pretty, winding, cobbled area where you can explore small shops to your heart's content, many stocking handmade goods. On top of this, there is also a colourful weekday market.
