This highly rated Spanish restaurant has a very modest, casual atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor sidewalk terrace seating. The restaurant specializes in Basque cuisine and has been in operation in Santiago for over 50 years. Some of the menu items you may choose from include seafood empanadas, shrimp, ceviche, steak & fries, and various risotto dishes. They also serve quite an extensive dessert menu, so save room. Pinpilinpausha is open Monday thru Saturday from 12:30PM to 11PM and on Sunday from 12:30PM to 4PM.
Carrer Nou is a delightful Spanish restaurant in the beautiful Providencia district. The casual dining room has a charming ambience, decorated with colorful painted pans against white brick walls. Their highly rated menu includes an array of delicious tapas like croquettes, grilled octopus, tender lamb, and outstanding papas bravas. Carrer Nou is also known throughout Santiago for their amazing sangria, and they also serve a delicious Pisco sour. Service is fast and very friendly. Carrer Nou is open from Monday thru Saturday from 1PM to 3:30PM and from 7:30PM to midnight.
Goemon is a traditional Japanese restaurant with a warm, cozy ambience to match, like what you might find in a small Tokyo bar. They have a delicious menu that changes daily based on what's fresh and their chef takes no shortcuts. Some of the staples include unagi, sashimi, nigiri, gyoza, sukiyaki, and shabu shabu. Goemon imports only the best sake from Japan and is hailed by visitors. Goemon is located near the Manuel Montt metro station and is open Monday thru Saturday from 12:30PM to 3PM and from 7:30PM to 10:30PM. Reservations are accepted and recommended.
El Honesto Mike
El Honesto Mike is a fun pub & restaurant in Las Condes, close to Costanera Center. This establishment has a warm, rustic atmosphere with a casual dining experience. There is a very large wall behind the bar full of taps for draft beer, along with a large variety of different liquors for mixed drinks. El Honesto Mike is best known for their burgers, praised to be the best in Las Condes. They offer a number of burger preparations on their menu as well as vegetarian options. El Honesto Mike is open Monday thru Wednesday from 1PM to 1AM and Thursday thru Saturday from 1PM to 2AM. It can be quite busy here, and they do not accept reservations.
Things to do in Santiago in October
Cajón del Maipo
Maipo Canyon is a wonderful natural attraction southeast of Santiago. It's part of the sprawling El Morado Natural Monument. Attractions in Cajón del Maipo include the Yeso Reservoir, abundant bird watching (including condors), numerous hiking trails, fishing, camping, and rafting. There are many quaint towns in the canyon, home to picturesque adobe buildings and relaxing hot springs. Adrenaline seekers can go bungee jumping and armchair archaeologists can explore paleontology sites. You can also find a great selection of attractively priced artisan goods and food in the villages. If there is still snow on the ground after a big winter you can explore the area with mountaineering guides.
Valle Nevado is a popular ski resort 50km east of Santiago, constantly expanding to meet the demands of visitors. There are almost 2,000 acres of skiable terrain on the mountain serviced by 18 lifts. There are over 40 runs on the mountain for all skill abilities, off-piste skiing, and three terrain parks. The resort also has great lodging options and outstanding restaurants. Valle Nevado typically closes by the end of October, but if it was a poor winter they also offer activities like horseback riding, hiking, and scenic chairlift rides.
Bahá'í Temple of South America
There's a curious building on the eastern outskirts of Santiago, south of Parque San Carlos Apoquindo. This is the first Bahá'í temple in South America and it opened its doors in 2016. The unique building looks like a closed flower from the outside, and a closer look reveals intricate décor and remarkable architecture. The property is open to everyone and is free of strict religious ceremony. It is a place to gather, pray, and promote peace. The main temple is surrounded by green, peaceful gardens perfect for meditation. There are outstanding views of Santiago from the temple.
Cerro San Cristobal
One of Santiago's main attractions is Cerro San Cristobal. This large hill rises 300m above the rest of the city and is located north of central Santiago. Cerro San Cristobal is home to the large Chilean National Zoo, a fun place to take the kids on the south end of the hill. There are two gorgeous pools to swim in on a hot day; these are known as the Tupahue pools. Cerro San Cristobal is best known for the large statue of the Virgin Mary that sits on top of the hill. A small plaza surrounds the statue and is the site of religious services and other gatherings. Pope John Paul II held a service here and you can ride the funicular car that he rode in to provide the mass. If you don't take the funicular you can walk on a graded path or even drive a car to the top. The walk will take approximately 45 minutes.
