Things to do in Santiago in August

Cerro Santa Lucia is a wonderful green space in the center of urban Santiago.  The small hill, an ancient volcano, makes for a relaxing setting in which people can walk, shop, and admire the various sites of Santa Lucia Park.  Some of these sites include gorgeous gardens, monuments, and fountains, including the massive Neptune Fountain.  A little higher up on the hill you'll find the 19th-century Hidalgo Castle.  This reminder of Santiago's military history now serves as an events center.  Many shows and concerts often take place on top of Cerro Santa Lucia.  Even if there's not a show happening you'll still be presented with breathtaking views of Santiago.

Museum of Memory and Human Rights

The Museum of Memory and Human Rights is one of the many impressive museums located at Parque Quinta Normal in central Santiago.  This is one of the newer museums in Santiago, completed in 2010.  The purpose of the museum is to commemorate the tens of thousands of Chileans who were murdered during the 23-year rule of Augusto Pinochet.  This somber museum was completed during the term of President Michelle Bachelet, who herself was tortured during the reign of Pinochet.  The museum takes you through the timeline of this bloody period and highlights other human rights issues throughout the world.  The museum is open Tuesday thru Sunday from 10AM to 6PM.
