What's the Weather like in San Sebastian in September

    Temperature

While many places in Spain start to wind down in September, thanks to the gorgeous weather in San Sebastian, the party carries on.

Peak temperatures of 25°C are the norm during the entire month of September, the same high experienced in July and August throughout the region. And though not so many people will visit as the peak summer season ends, average lows only fall to 14°C in September which means the nights are as inviting as the days are long.

September has experienced many hot days in San Sebastian, with record temperatures peaking at 35°C in 1987. Even the lowest temperature ever recorded in San Sebastian during this month was still a very mild 8°C, ensuring plenty of good weather for anyone that visits.

    Rain

As with every other month in San Sebastian, there will be some chance of rain throughout the region. The maritime climate means there is no month of the year when it doesn't rain in San Sebastian. But that just adds to the beauty of this gorgeous paradise.

It is expected that there will be some rain on 12 of the 30 days in September. But only 115mm of water are expected to fall throughout the entire month, which is just 5mm more than experienced in the previous month of August. When the showers do come to San Sebastian in September, they are usually over within the hour, so there is still plenty of time to enjoy the sun and hit the beach.

    Average Sea Temperature

Indeed, sea temperatures remain at a very welcoming 21°C through most of September, offering the perfect time to hit the beach without the crowds that the peak months of July and August bring. Instead you can enjoy a far more relaxed side of the Costa Verde, yet still relish in the 12 hours of sunshine that each day is forecast to bring.

    San Sebastian Hotels in September

The Hotel Green Nest is a fabulously affordable place to stay in San Sebastian, designed especially to attract the younger traveller. This ultra-modern hotel is just a short bus ride or bike ride from the centre of the old town and offers easy access to the beaches in the area. With four and six bed dorms on site, even if you are travelling on your own, there is ample opportunity to meet new friends. The views are incredible and the accommodation is warm and welcoming. It is the perfect way to experience the delights of San Sebastian without having to break the bank to do it.

Situated on the outskirts of Parte Vieja, the Hotel Londres is the biggest hotel on La Concha beach and is probably one of the most traditional. As its name suggests it feels as if someone has tried to design the perfect English hotel, and then put it directly on one of the most popular beaches in the world. Guests love the fact that there is a bingo hall around the back for when the weather clouds over. And the plush interior ensures there is always somewhere to feel cosy. The perfect place to stay for a quick weekend trip or a long winter getaway. For those that like more conventional hospitality, the Hotel Londres is a home away from home.

For a mid-way compromise between the Hotel Green Nest and Hotel Londres, try Hotel Arrizul. With a view of Zurriola beach, it has plenty to attract the younger visitor. But the original architecture and proximity to the Old Town ensure that it has something for the more traditional guest too.  With views over the streets of Gos and the wonderful sight of the Kursaal Exhibition Centre, everyone can feel comfortable here, no matter how long they decide to stay.

    San Sebastian Beach in September

The world famous La Concha beach is an experience not to be missed by anyone visiting San Sebastian. As one of the most popular beaches in the world, La Concha is never going to be quiet in July. But the beautiful long stretch of white sand, the city views and the wealth of different personalities that come to visit ensure this is an experience of a life time. Take a picnic on cooler days or sit and watch the sunset at night. Surfers, runners, roller skaters, buskers and people watchers all flock to this area whether they are up and active or sat in one of the many restaurants or coffee shops. It's everything you would want from a very stylish beach, and it's all available at La Concha.

Ondarreta is a far more family orientated beach in San Sebastian. Situated between Monte Igeldo and the Palacio Miramar gardens, the 500 meter long beach is ready for Volleyball, Football, Beach Tennis or just taking in some sun. When the weather is less favourable, the beach becomes a haven for surfers and body boarders ready to hit the waves. And with the warm sea temperatures in July, Ondarreta beach is a great place to be.

    Bars and Restaurants

Everything from Steak and Chips to Pintxos is recommended at the Astelena Bar. And it all comes with a price tag that will make you smile. It is hard to find economical places to eat in San Sebastian, especially when you also want a lively atmosphere. But Astelena Bar has done it. The music is lively, the drinks are well made and the patio is the perfect place to while away a warm September evening. Though this fabulous little bar is tucked away in the corner of the central plaza, no one should miss a visit.

Though you will have to take a taxi from the centre of town to get to Agorregi Jatetxea, the trip is definitely well worth it. The exquisite food offered from this restaurant makes it no surprise that the chef previously worked in a Michelin starred establishment. Just order the tasting menu and you will see exactly what we mean. All the wine for your meal is included within the price ensuring a truly cost effective way to sample high quality food. And though the restaurant has no views to boast of or high prices to demand, what you get from Agorregi Jatetxea is good, honest, high quality food at a cost most people would be happy to afford.

Though many places in San Sebastian offer great Pintxos and others offer outstanding cocktails, Sirimiri Gastroleku can provide both. The staff make all their guests feel extremely welcome, while the great value has many people coming back for more. Even in the middle of September, there is usually a place for new visitors at Sirimiri Gastroleku. Finish of the night with Espresso Martinis and know that you've had another great night in San Sebastian.

vis have attended the festival – so head down to do a bit of celebrity spotting during the nine days of screenings attended by world famous directors and film stars.
