Temperature

Puerto de la Cruz experiences a mild end of spring with average temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius. The average high is 18 degrees Celsius with an average low of 11 degrees Celsius.   The highest temperature recorded for May was 38 degrees Celsius and the lowest 7 degrees Celsius. The nights can be cool so pack a few items of warm clothing as well as your swimming costume.

Wind speeds are fairly constant and low at about 21km/h or 13 mph. The highest recorded one speed for May was 65km/h or 40mph. May is generally one of the calmest months of the year with very little wind.

Warm days, mild sea temperatures, sunny days and a low rainfall attract a number of tourists to the region and May can be regarded as the pre-season. Hotel rooms are generally still cheaper but this is a popular time to visit for families with small children who can avoid the school holidays so it can be noisy and crowded. However it is still a far more relaxing time for a holiday then the high summer months.

Puerto de la Cruz Hotels in May

Catalonia Las Vegas is situated right next to Lago Martianez which makes it the perfect place to stay to take advantage of this wonderful attraction. The hotel has fantastic sea views and is great for those on a budget or families with a starting price of just 39 Euros per room. There is an onsite restaurant and bar. The hotel has a large pool and sundeck. Pets are allowed on request.

Villa Rosalva if you want your own space in a relaxed atmosphere, with attentive service and spectacular views then this is the place for you. You can have studio apartment or you can chose to have your own large Casa that can sleep up to twelve people. You can cook in your own kitchen or go to the lovely on-site restaurant and bar. The hotel has a number of pools and some of the Casa's have their own private pools. They are situated on the mountainside, away from the beaches, which gives this hotel a sense of peace and quiet.

Puerto de la Cruz Beach for May

May is a wonderful time to visit one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in Puerto de la Cruz. Playa Bollullo the walk to the beach is fairly strenuous and best not attempted in the summer months. In May the temperature is warm enough for you to enjoy the beach but still cool enough for the walk to not be overly taxing. The beach is long and narrow and made up of the characteristic black sand of the Canary Islands.  You will find a life guard and a small beach bar but you will need to bring anything else you need with you.

Playa de Los Patos is located a few hundred meters after the Restaurant at Playa de Bollullo. There is a very steep path that leads down to the beach which small children and people who have physical difficulties might find impassable.  This quite beach is used as a nudist beach so please keep that in mind if you do chose to take your children to this beach. The waves are very high and you will find strong currents making this an ideal surfing beach.  This stretch of the coastline is very remote and it can be a good place to escape the crowds at the more popular main beaches.  There are no rental places, shops or lifeguards on Playa de Los Patos. 

Bars and Restaurants

This is the place to go if you are missing the taste of home the head to Beehive Bar  where you will find a wide selection of beers as well as British favourites including pies, crisps and full English breakfasts. The staff are very friendly and will answer all your questions about the best places to eat and visit on the island. The bar is centrally located at C/La hoya 25. If you want to catch a game of football or rugby they have a number of big screen T.Vs for sports fans.

The best place for really great seafood in Puerto de la Cruz is Tambo. The restaurant has amazing views overlooking the ocean and a menu filled with every seafood dish you can imagine such as garlic prawns, fried squid and lobster ravioli. The fish and seafood platter for two is a very popular option. The restaurant looks a bit dated from outside but inside the decor is relaxed and modern. Sit out on the terrace and enjoy the views and warm weather. They are located at Called Anaterve1/ Plaza Manuel Ballestro.

Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz in May

Casa de la Aduna is the orginal Customs house of Puerto de la Cruz. This is the only remaining example of a civil building from the seventeenth century in Tenerife.  It was built at a time when Puerto de la Cruz was a major trading port for the Canary Islands and was used to ensure compliance with trade regulations. In the late 19th century the building became the British Consulate and was used as such until the advent of tourism in the town. A number of older buildings where torn down but the Customs house survived thanks to the Baillon family who purchased it as a family home in 1963. They have opened part of the house to the public and this section houses a small museum of trade and the early history of Puerto de la Cruz.  You will find Casa de la Aduna next to the tourist office in the old part of town.

If you feel like a relaxing game of golf then La Rosaleda Golf Club is the perfect course for you. This course is ideal for beginners or anybody who wants to improve their game on a relatively easy course. The course has an entertaining layout with sand bunkers, lakes and waterfalls.  They have a golf school with instructors for every level of player on-site. You will find a driving range, cafe, putting green and fully equipped changing facilities.
