Playa Paraiso Weather November Averages, Canary Islands
Although December is the wettest month of the year in the small purpose-built resort of Playa Paraiso on the west coast of Tenerife, don't let this put you off as there is still plenty of warm sunshine to be had here at this time of year. In fact many visitors from Northern Europe come here for the winter sun and escape their own chilly winters.
While temperatures this month may be down on their toasty summer highs of 27ºC (81ºF) in August, the warm spring-like temperatures this month still make it an attractive winter getaway. With an average temperature at this time of year of 19ºC (66ºF) you may not want to spend the whole holiday on the beach but with average highs of 22ºC (72ºF), it is still worth bringing your sunbathing gear just in case.
Despite the lower temperatures at this time of year, night time temperatures remain relatively warm with average low temperatures this month of just 16ºC (61ºF), still a comfortable temperature for sitting outside at night although you might want to pack a cardigan or some extra layers.
This month does see the highest level of rainfall in the resort with, on average, 35mm falling over 6 days but, even so, there is only a 17% chance of you experiencing rain and only a 6% chance of a cloudy day. Just keep an eye on the local forecast to ensure you're not out and about when the rain falls.
Those hoping to take advantage of the many water sports offered at the resort, including the excellent snorkelling, will be grateful for the warm seawater at this time of year, still averaging 21ºC (70ºF).
Where to Stay
For a touch of pure luxury try the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort & Spa, set in its own extensive gardens with views out over the ocean this 5 star hotel is part of the Leading Hotels of the World group and it's easy to see why. As well as rooms and suites the hotel offers a selection of private villas with their own pools and gardens. The hotel offers eight restaurants with a range of different cuisines as well as snack bars and bars and a state-of-the-art spa.
The Lagos de Fañabé just across the promenade from Fañabé Beach is a great mid-price option with several beautiful swimming pools, gardens, sun-terrace and fitness suite for those who don't want to venture too far. If, however, the sun is shining and the temperature is reaching the average high for December of 22ºC (72ºF), you might want to take the short stroll across the promenade to the beach where the hotel has its own beach club and facilities for the use of its guests.
For an all-inclusive family-friendly option on the popular Costa Adeje try the 4-star Iberostar Torviscas Playa, situated next to the beach. Perfect for a Christmas break with the family there is plenty of family-sized accommodation in the resort as well as child-friendly entertainment and activities at the three children clubs for age groups 4-7 years old, 8-12 years old and 13-17 years olds. There is also plenty to keep the adults entertained with live shows, sports facilities, a spa and excursions.
Things to Do
Take advantage of the cooler sunshine of December to explore Tenerife's beautiful, mountainous interior with a hike up the 12,000ft to the summit of the island's beautiful Mount Teide in the heart of the Teide National Park. Stop off for a refreshing drink at Vilafor, the highest town in Spain, before taking in the breath-taking vistas from Roques de Garcia. Trails are clearly marked but for a bit of local knowledge consider taking a guide like those at Tenerife Outdoors.
More than just sun and water sports, Tenerife has a rich history and culture which you begin to realise when you visit some of its picturesque historic towns and villages. Garachico at the northwest tip of the island is just such a town. With its pretty cobbled streets, old churches and stunning coastal views this is well worth the excursion. If the weather is kind then you could head down to the saltwater swimming pools carved into the town's dramatic volcanic rock. If you're less lucky with the sunshine then head into the Convento San Francisco, the town's eclectic museum housed in a stunning, historic building.
Hit the Beach
Imagine what a beach would look like if it was designed by an artist, well at Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz you don't have to because that is exactly what this is. Artist Cesar Manrique landscaped this unique stretch of coast line adding colour to the black volcanic sand with stunning botanical gardens of bright vibrant flowers, beautiful waterfalls and pretty seawater pools along its length. Translated in to English as Garden Beach, this is a great spot for grabbing some sun and taking a dip (average seawater temperatures are 21ºC in December) or just walking along the promenade and taking some photos.
Nestled at the foot of the stunning Anaga Mountains the beautiful Playa las Gaviotas near Santa Cruz on the north of the island is quieter than its neighbours and is a very laidback beach where nudity is accepted. There are a few cafes and restaurants all with the same chilled out vibe.
Eating & Drinking Out
Take a trip down to the hustle and bustle of Playa de las Américas with its lively bars and restaurants and its wide, yellow sand beach and stop off for an authentic Italian meal at Bianco Restaurant. There's a menu that will keep the whole family happy at this elegant beachfront eatery, from delicious thin-crust pizzas topped with fresh local ingredients and homemade pasta dishes for the kids to more refined dishes such as the fillet steak with foie gras for the adults.
If you fancy more traditional British fare in Playa de las Américas but don't want to compromise on quality, check out Christy's with its superb Sunday roasts complete with Yorkshire puddings or sumptuous beer-battered cod with homemade chips, this is probably better than you'll get back in Britain.
Up the coast at Puerto de Santiago is the Route 66 bar, where you can enjoy great live bands every night playing a range of music. The atmosphere is always friendly and lively and the music really is a treat.
