Playa de la Arena Weather October Averages, Canary Islands
The first month of autumn slowly relaxes the high temperatures in Playa de la Arena, bringing the average down to a very comfortable 22°C (72°F). The nights are still warm and pleasant at 19°C, with a slightly increased humidity of 73% on average, while the hotter days are expected to reach a high average of 25°C. We do recommend that you don't forget to stay hydrated, as it still tends to get hot enough to cause discomfort throughout the first two weeks of the month.
The days offer up to 9 hours of glorious sunshine, with 80% average chances of full-on sunny days to occur. Chances of rain are still ridiculously low at 5%, with only 4% chances of clouds, so this easily translates to yet another month of excellent weather conditions for those who seek the tropical summer when the gloomy rains take over the continental parts of Europe.
Rainfall is not expected to exceed 6mm on average, roughly spread over a total of 6 days. So worry less about packing an umbrella and make sure you're stocked up on SPF protection, as the sun might harm the overexposed skin.
Chances of windy days stay up at 58% on average, with wind speeds increasing back up to 13mph. Most of these now slowly shift back to western and north-eastern influences, consisting of cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and dry gusts from Morocco and Western Sahara. The beautiful ocean maintains its superb average temperature of 22°C (72°F), with high tides and warm currents which offer perfect conditions for various marine activities, from swimming, snorkelling and diving to sailing and windsurfing. Obviously, summer doesn't go away easily from Tenerife. Technically speaking, it doesn't really go away at all.
There is a luxurious 5-star hotel situated on the beautiful coast of Adeje, called Adrian Hotel Roca Nivaria, which offers splendid twin or double rooms for £132 per night for couples. The resort features a variety of excellent facilities, such as a heated pool, tennis courts, giant chess and archery grounds and the Azules de Novaria Spa, which specializes in hot tubs, mud baths and an impressive range of beauty treatments. The posh rooms all come fitted with air conditioning, flat screen TV, lounge area and en suite bathroom, and they all open up to superb views of the Atlantic Ocean.
H10 Costa Adeje Palace is definitely one of the top choices for November, offering high class accommodation in modern double rooms for just £91 per night. The property opens up to La Enramada Beach and also sports an outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and a spa centre. Playa de Las Americas is only a 2.5 mile drive from the hotel, and there is a shuttle service available on-site. The suites are all stylishly decorated and fitted with air conditioning, flat screen TV and private bathroom, while the balconies open up to panoramic views of the garden, the pool and the blue ocean waters.
Costa Adeje Gran Hotel doesn't fall short either, offering beautiful twin or double rooms for just £100 per night for couples during the month of October. This is a sumptuous 5-star resort which boasts four lovely swimming pool and a high end spa, while its rooms offer air conditioning, a plush lounge area and satellite TV along with the splendiferous views. The pools are surrounded by a spacious sun terrace and lush tropical gardens, and the rooftop is also fortunate to hold another pool, giving its users some breath-taking panoramas of the neighbouring mountains and ocean. It's only a few yards away from the exclusive Duque and Fanabe beaches, and it is also home to two private areas for naturist use.
There are plenty of beaches still perfect for basking in the sun and splashing around in the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean even in the middle of October. Clearly the weather is more than perfect for this, so we're glad to recommend a couple of small but fantastic beaches slightly further south from Playa de la Arena. Playa Abama belongs to the luxury hotel bearing the same name, and is a delightful stretch of light golden sand. The water entrance is shallow and the seabed is soft not the best spot for snorkelling but certainly one of the best swimming areas around the western coast of Tenerife. You can easily grab drinks and snacks from the hotel terrace, and you would be able to enjoy the exclusive feel of this little corner of paradise.
Another great beach is Playa Ajabo, which can be found in Callao Salvaje, on the southern coast of the island. It's only a short drive from Arena and Los Gigantes, and perfect for those who seek a natural beach away from the bustling parts of Puerto de Santiago. It's a mixture of black sand and shingle, with calm crystalline waters lapping at it and throwing occasional medium-height waves around. It's a great spot for snorkelling due to the rocky seabed, and if you're down for just a swim, you might want to consider some flip flops just in case, at it can feel rough to those who are unaccustomed to naturally rugged beaches.
There is an abundance of outdoor dining options all across the western coast of Tenerife, but one of the best options to try would have to be Sauco. Its menu is a delicious mix of seafood and farmyard specialities, prepared in an open kitchen enough to get your senses rolling from the moment you set foot inside. Its best feature has to be the terrace though, on which you can sit back and enjoy either lunch or dinner, while watching the beautiful ocean draw the sun closer until it becomes blood red and breath-taking.
If you're planning to visit Ajabo Beach in Callajo Salvaje, you might as well make your way down to La Romantica, a delightful little restaurant which specializes in all things fishy and seafood. The dishes are phenomenal and there's a wine cellar to pair with whichever dish you choose. The service is excellent and the atmosphere best suited for couples who have run away from the hustle and bustle of the world and are looking for a cosy and intimate place to enjoy over a candle-light dinner.
For those looking for some authentic rustic dining, Irache Gara is happy to please, as it sits on the hills of Vera de Erques, a beautiful little spot near Guia de Isora. Their speciality is grilled meat and local cuisine in a typical Canarian setting. If you go there on a Sunday you'll get to enjoy your delicious lunch in the company of minstrels playing local folk songs. And the wines and beers are just so crisp and refreshing!
Take the one day trip to Aqualand, a fun and exciting waterpark near Playa de Las Americas. This place bursts with colourful water slides, chutes and flumes, funky restaurants and bars for the occasional timeout and a heap of great activities to engage in while on the premises. Apart from the rides for both adults and kids, you'll also be delighted to get a seat at the Dolphinarium, where playful dolphins jump around and perform all kinds of tricks to the delight of the audience. If you're looking for all-day family fun, then Aqualand is definitely one of your best options in the area.
In October the skies are exceptionally clean and clear, and the high points of Mount Teide Nature Park offer intense views of the tourmaline night sky, perfect for watching the Perseid meteor shower. On the night of 20-21 October you'll be able to get a front row seat of the Orionids slashing across the sky, especially if you drive up to Roques de Garcia. Other astronomers and amateur stargazers will join in; just don't forget to stock up on a blanket and some hot chocolate to make this experience truly memorable.
The 12th of October is a national holiday as it celebrates Fiesta Nacional de Espana, or better known as Spain's National Day. It celebrates the day in which Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas in 1492. According to the history books, he sailed from Palos de la Frontera on August 3rd 1492, and reached the islands now known as the Bahamas on October 12th of the same year. It's a major holiday for Spain and thus celebrated with much fervour, along with food and drink festivities and public services closures. The second Monday of October is also celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, marking the same date and event.
