Paphos Weather August Averages, Cyprus

    Paphos Weather for August 2022

What's the Weather like in Paphos in August

August is, on average, the hottest month of the year in Paphos, though there is generally little to choose between July and August.

    Temperature

Although the temperatures may be on the high side for some vistors, Paphos is not prone to the degree of extreme heat that is occasionally experienced in inland parts of Cyprus, thanks to the moderating effects of the nearby sea.

The daytime temperature rises to an average maximum of 30°C and falls to an average overnight minimum of 21°C. Thus, August is a good time of year for nightlife as the temperatures remain comfortably warm during the evenings and overnight.

    Heatwaves

Inland parts of Cyprus are quite prone to extreme heatwaves when southerly winds drag up hot and dry air from northern Africa, but Paphos, close to the south-west coast, tends to miss the highest temperatures. During the period 1991-2005, the highest temperature recorded at Paphos in August was 36.6°C.

That period included the exceptional August 1998 heatwave which triggered 59 premature deaths in Cyprus and saw temperatures widely exceed 40°C in inland parts of the island, triggering widespread forest fires, but Paphos was relatively unscathed.

    Rain

A large majority of Augusts pass by without any measurable rainfall at all, though short-lived downpours are not completely unknown. The period 1991-2005 produced no measurable precipitation at all, though the earlier reference period 1961-1990 had a mean of 0.2mm per August, implying that precipitation was observed on very rare occasions during that period.

    Sunshine

Sunshine is abundant during August, though due to the shortening daylight hours it is not quite as sunny as June or July. The sun shines for an average total of 366 hours, or 11.8 hours per day.

    Humidity

The mean relative humidity is moderately high at 71%, but slightly below the average for July.

    Sea Temperature

The average sea temperature rises as the summer progresses and during August the long-term mean is 27°C, which is ideal for most underwater activities including swimming, diving and snorkelling.
