{"id":964,"date":"2013-10-25T20:37:18","date_gmt":"2013-10-25T20:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/?p=964"},"modified":"2013-10-25T20:37:18","modified_gmt":"2013-10-25T20:37:18","slug":"weather-warnings-extended-for-risk-of-significant-uk-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/weather-warnings-extended-for-risk-of-significant-uk-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Weather warnings extended for risk of significant UK storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\">Met Office<\/a> is warning of the risk of a significant storm bringing exceptionally strong winds to parts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/country\/uk\/\">England and Wales<\/a> on Sunday night into Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutterstock_41888026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-965\" title=\"shutterstock_41888026\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutterstock_41888026-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutterstock_41888026-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutterstock_41888026.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Currently forecasts suggest a low pressure system will rapidly deepen just to the south west of the UK later on Sunday, before moving across the country.<\/p>\n<p>This could bring gusts of 60-80mph quite widely across the southern half of the UK, with gusts of more than 80mph possible in places &#8211; especially on exposed coasts.<\/p>\n<p>Winds of this strength could bring down trees or cause structural damage, potentially causing transport disruption or power cuts.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a storm you would see every year, and if the storm arrives in line with current expectations wind strengths will be similar to storms seen in March 2008, January 2007 and October 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Willington, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: &#8220;We are talking about a storm which doesn&#8217;t yet exist, so there remains some uncertainty about its possible timing, track and strength. However, several forecasts models currently suggest we will see a significant storm with exceptionally strong winds impacting parts of England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a developing situation and we&#8217;d advise people to stay up to date with our forecasts and warnings over the weekend, and be prepared to change their plans if necessary. We&#8217;ll continue to work closely with authorities and emergency services to ensure they are aware of the expected conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The storm is also expected to feature heavy rain for some parts of the country, which also has the potential to cause some localised impacts.<\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0<a title=\"Environment Agency (this link opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.environment-agency.gov.uk\/\">Environment Agency<\/a>\u00a0spokesperson said: &#8220;Environment Agency staff teams are out working to minimise river flood risk, clearing debris from streams and unblocking culverts and will continue to closely monitor the situation. We are supporting local authorities who will respond to any reports of surface water flooding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seafronts, quaysides and\u00a0jetties should be avoided due to the risk of overtopping by waves. People are advised to sign up to receive free flood warnings from the Environment Agency website, check weather reports on the Met Office website and be prepared to change their travel plans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Martin Hobbs the head of Asset Resilience at the\u00a0<a title=\"Highways Agency (this link opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.highways.gov.uk\/\">Highways Agency<\/a>: &#8220;We are\u00a0working closely with the Met Office to monitor conditions\u00a0ahead\u00a0of the weather being forecast over the weekend.\u00a0 Drivers, especially those considering a trip with a caravan this weekend, are encouraged to think\u00a0carefully before setting off as driving conditions are expected to be\u00a0difficult\u00a0on Sunday evening and\u00a0Monday.\u00a0If you do have to\u00a0make a journey\u00a0by road,\u00a0be prepared,\u00a0plan\u00a0your jour\u00adney\u00a0in advance and\u00a0check the lat\u00adest weather conditions along\u00a0your\u00a0route.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Be aware of sudden gusts of wind, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles plenty of space.
