When a dark cloud appears, a treasure trove of\u00a0activities and days out is on hand to excite, entertain and fascinate the whole family &#8211; especially handy with October half-term coming up.<br \/>\nHere\u2019s some great things to do if the weather takes a turn for the worst\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/shutterstock_15724231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-859\" title=\"shutterstock_15724231\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/shutterstock_15724231-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/shutterstock_15724231-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/shutterstock_15724231.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Science days out\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Return to where time, in one sense, literally began with a visit to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmm.ac.uk\/places\/royal-observatory\/\">Royal Greenwich Observatory<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/london\/\">London<\/a>. You can see all sorts of early scientific instruments, admire the stars and straddle the east and west hemispheres by standing on the Prime Meridian line.<\/p>\n<p>Budding astronauts should pay a visit to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacecentre.co.uk\/\">National Space Centre<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/leicester\/\">Leicester<\/a>. Not only does it contain the UK\u2019s largest planetarium, but you can jump on the \u2018moon\u2019 and test your driving skills in the Micro-G Manoeuvre module. During the October half-term holidays a team of mad scientists descend to explode pumpkins, engineer slime and explore the scarier side of space. Why not join in the fun?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travel back in time with little historians<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you really want to escape the rain, discover a netherworld dating back\u00a0to the Dark Ages hidden in a labyrinth of caves beneath\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/nottingham\/\">Nottingham <\/a>in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofcaves.com\/\">City of Caves<\/a>\u00a0. It can get pretty dark down there, so take a torch and see what lies beneath. Back up top, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafmanston.co.uk\/\">RAF Manston History Museum<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/kent_gb\/\">Kent<\/a> is one of the last remaining airfields that participated in the Battle of Britain. Come here for a close-up look at classic aircraft, including the famous Spitfire.<\/p>\n<p>Don a horned helmet and explore a real Viking kingdom at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk\/\">JORVIK<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holiday-weather.com\/york\/\">York<\/a>. Travel back in time\u00a0and get a taste of Viking life\u00a01,000 years ago. Find out more about colourful characters like Ivar the Boneless and experience the disorientating bustle of a busy market from the first century.<\/p>\n<p>For more medieval adventure, head to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk\/Visit_Us\/Norwich_Castle\/index.htm\">Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery<\/a>\u00a0. You\u2019ll learn about warrior Queen Boudicca and see history played out before you with the help of sound, video and interactive exhibits that the kids will love. Or for everything from Egyptian mummies to ancient relics, head to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/visitbristol.co.uk\/site\/things-to-do\/bristol-museum-art-gallery-p24581\">Bristol Museum and Art Gallery<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s packed to the rafters with them. Under 7s can try out new activities in the museum&#8217;s popular play and learn space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk to the animals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Head to the sub-tropical Isle of Wight and you can visit tropical birds and animals at the award winning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitisleofwight.co.uk\/things-to-do\/amazon-world-p152351\">Amazon World<\/a>\u00a0. With everything from Lemurs and Crocodiles, to Toucans and Tarantula\u2019s you can truly escape the rain \u2013 they even have their own desert.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don&#8217;t mind a little rain&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With both its indoor and outdoor facilities, you can have a great time at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitconkers.com\/\">Conkers<\/a>\u00a0in the National Forest even if it\u2019s pouring outside. Inside, there are four discovery zones designed for children and adults of all ages. Explore the Enchanted Forest Adventure Play area, or climb onto the simulated Tree Top Walk with a moving bridge through the skies.<\/p>\n<p>For more forest fun, you can make some new friends in the Lake District at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hop-skip-jump.com\/\">The World of Beatrix Potter<\/a>\u00a0Attraction. You\u2019ll find Peter Rabbit and all the gang sheltering from the rain in their cosy hideaway.
